Diamondbacks | Chip Hale may be replaced

Fri, 22 Jul 2016 23:48:45 -0700

The Arizona Diamondbacks may replace manager Chip Hale in the next couple weeks.

Fantasy Tip: A managerial change doesn't carry fantasy value with it, but whoever replaces Hale may have his own set of favorites. Phil Nevin is rumored to be in line for the job, and Nevin could have his own favorite players. If Hale is let go, see how the lineup shakes out before going for certain players in daily and overall leagues. Players like Paul Goldschmidt and Zack Greinke would be safe, obviously.

Diamondbacks | Zack Greinke to throw bullpen session

Fri, 22 Jul 2016 19:47:07 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Zack Greinke (oblique) will throw his first bullpen session Saturday, July 23, and a decision on whether he is ready for a simulated game will be made following the session.

Fantasy Tip: A timetable for his return remains uncertain, but he should be stashed in all formats in the meantime.

Diamondbacks | Archie Bradley good on the road

Fri, 22 Jul 2016 15:43:38 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Archie Bradley has a 1.57 ERA in his last four road outings, which is the second-lowest mark in the National League since his promotion from the minors May 29.

Fantasy Tip: Bradley, who has a 4.37 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 8.9 K/9 on the year, is facing the Reds in a hitter-friendly environment Friday night. Given his road splits he'd seem to be a nice under-the-radar daily pick as your second starter. But the fact remains he's been pretty inconsistent this year and is a low-end risk-reward starter.

Diamondbacks | Zack Greinke rehab update

Wed, 20 Jul 2016 19:00:02 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Zack Greinke (oblique) played catch from a distance of 120 to 150 feet Tuesday, July 19. He could have a bullpen workout in the coming days, according to manager Chip Hale.

Fantasy Tip: Greinke was pitching well prior to landing on the disabled list and should remain stashed in all fantasy formats. Since April 30, the 32-year-old right-hander is 8-1 with a 2.63 ERA over 12 starts, with 15 walks and 67 strikeouts over 78 2/3 innings.

Diamondbacks | Welington Castillo had minor hand injury

Wed, 20 Jul 2016 18:48:00 -0700

Updating a previous report, Arizona Diamondbacks C Welington Castillo (hand) was out of the starting lineup against the Toronto Blue Jays Wednesday, July 20, because of a minor hand injury suffered after being hit by a pitch Monday, July 18. However, manager Chip Hale said he was fine and added that he was available off the bench.

Fantasy Tip: Through 69 games this season, Castillo is batting .261 with 10 home runs and 30 RBI. He should be viewed as a midrange catching option in all fantasy formats.

Diamondbacks | A.J. Pollock wants to play in 2016

Wed, 20 Jul 2016 14:54:27 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks OF A.J. Pollock (elbow) has been hitting off a tee and throwing from 75 feet, and he believes he will return and play again this season.

"I didn't have a thought that I wasn't going to play this year," Pollock said. "I'm going to play, and when I'm out there, it's going to be like I feel like I could've been out there a month earlier, which is a good thing. I'm going to get asked the question, 'Do you think it's too early?' and it's not going to be. It's going to be really, really easy. When I'm out there, I'm going to be ready to go."

Fantasy Tip: View Pollock as a desperation stash in all one-year leagues. However, he's a ripe stash for any keeper/dynasty owners who are already looking ahead to 2017. Pollock is coming off a monster five-category season, after all. Stay tuned for updates, but your expectations should be kept in check.

Diamondbacks | Zack Greinke throwing off mound

Wed, 20 Jul 2016 10:28:00 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Zack Greinke (oblique) is expected to throw off a mound Wednesday, July 20, for the first time since sustaining an oblique injury Tuesday, June 28.

Fantasy Tip: Greinke went 7-0 with a 2.18 ERA and limited opposing hitters to a .224 on-base percentage through his eight starts prior to his injury-shortened outing June 28. Continue to stash Greinke in all fantasy formats and check back for updates.

Diamondbacks | Welington Castillo not playing

Wed, 20 Jul 2016 10:14:51 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks C Welington Castillo is not in the starting lineup Wednesday, July 20. C Tuffy Gosewisch is doing the catching and batting seventh against Toronto Blue Jays SP Marcus Stroman.

Fantasy Tip: Ignore Gosewisch in all fantasy formats Wednesday. The backstop has a .213 career average and only two home runs in four major league seasons. Castillo figures to be taking a normal day of rest.

Diamondbacks | David Peralta could return next week

Tue, 19 Jul 2016 23:05:35 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks OF David Peralta (back) could rejoin the team at some point next week, according to manager Chip Hale. He went 1-for-6 with a double and an RBI in his first two rehab games for Class AA Mobile.

Fantasy Tip: Peralta has been out over a month now, but luckily for the 28-year-old, it looks like he's finally nearing his return. He's definitely worth scoping out, as he produced an impressive .312/.371/.522 slash line with 17 homers and 78 RBI a year ago in his sophomore season. Due to Arizona's weak depth in the outfield, he'll also probably be thrust back into a prominent part of the batting order.

Diamondbacks | Zack Godley suffers first loss

Tue, 19 Jul 2016 22:46:59 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Zack Godley saw his record fall to 2-1 after losing his start Tuesday, July 19, opposite the Toronto Blue Jays. The right-hander worked five innings, surrendering four runs (three earned) on six hits and a walk. He also struck out a career-high-tying seven batters.

Fantasy Tip: Making his third start of the season, Godley was mostly mediocre other than the strikeout total, which shouldn't be expected, as the 26-year-old had accumulated only five K's combined in his previous two assignments. Taking the spot of Shelby Miller in the rotation, Godley will have to exhibit some consistency before he becomes relevant in most leagues.

Diamondbacks | Zack Greinke plays catch

Tue, 19 Jul 2016 15:21:53 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Zack Greinke (oblique) played catch again Tuesday, July 19, but manager Chip Hale said it's unlikely Greinke makes his return against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Fantasy Tip: The D-backs are understandably being cautious with their best pitcher, who is dealing with a tricky injury for hurlers. After a bad start with his new team, Greinke has rebounded nicely and sports a 3.62 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 7.5 K/9. His owners will want to immediately return him to their lineups when he's back, but patience is required.

Diamondbacks | Tyler Clippard falters in ninth

Sun, 17 Jul 2016 19:57:31 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks RP Jake Barrett recorded the final two outs to pick up the save against the Los Angeles Dodgers Sunday, July 17, after RP Tyler Clippard recorded just one out and allowed three runs on two hits.

Fantasy Tip: Clippard failed to seal the deal in his first save chance since Brad Ziegler was traded away. Of course, Daniel Hudson didn't do much better, allowing two runs in the eighth inning. Hang on to Clippard for the time being, but the closing situation could become messy in Arizona.

Diamondbacks | Robbie Ray fires seven scoreless

Sun, 17 Jul 2016 18:08:50 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Robbie Ray allowed four hits while walking two and striking out seven over seven scoreless innings in a win over the Los Angeles Dodgers Sunday, July 17.

Fantasy Tip: Ray continues to pile up strikeouts at an impressive clip, but consistency has eluded him. His 4.49 ERA limits his value to NL-only formats and deeper mixed leagues.

Diamondbacks | Chris Herrmann hits the DL

Sun, 17 Jul 2016 12:49:47 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks C/OF Chris Herrmann (hamstring) was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring on Sunday, July 17, after receiving the results of an MRI. 2B/OF Mike Freeman was recalled from Class AAA Reno in a corresponding move.

Fantasy Tip: Herrmann has been playing through his hamstring issue but aggravated it on Friday. Although he is still one of the better fantasy catching options for the season, with his .290 average, six homers and 28 RBI, he has only managed one home run and eight RBI in part-time duty since the start of June, making him even a poor option in two-catcher leagues.

Diamondbacks | Welington Castillo takes a seat

Sun, 17 Jul 2016 12:22:36 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks C Welington Castillo and OF Yasmany Tomas are both absent from the lineup against Los Angeles Dodgers SP Kenta Maeda on Sunday, July 17. 2B/OF Mike Freeman will get the nod in right field and bat sixth, while C Tuffy Gosewisch will draw a start behind the plate and hit seventh.

Fantasy Tip: Castillo is mired in a 2-for-24 slump with no extra-base hits over his last nine games, although today's non-start appears to a regularly scheduled maintenance day. Tomas has received only one game off since June 20 - not including the All-Star break and is scuffling as well, batting .150 with no extra-base hits in July. Freeman and Gosewisch should only be considered as last-minute options in NL-only leagues today.
