Diamondbacks | Yasmany Tomas a work in progress at 3B

Thu, 26 Feb 2015 09:40:15 -0800

Arizona Diamondbacks OF Yasmany Tomas worked out at third base in camp Wednesday, Feb. 25, and he was rough around the edges at the hot corner, bobbling some balls and misplaying others at times while showing an improper technique. Tomas, 24, was primarily an outfielder in Cuba, but he is downplaying the transition. At 6-2, 230 pounds, manager Chip Hale said the team needs to make sure his thick, strong build will be able to hold up at third base. The D-backs will have to make a decision some point next month on where Tomas will play.

Fantasy Tip: Tomas will be a sleeper in the late middle rounds this year for his titanic power upside, and if he's able to add third base eligibility, all the better for his owners. Without it, though, he still is worth a cheap gamble for outfield depth.

Diamondbacks | Peter O'Brien impressing D-backs

Wed, 25 Feb 2015 14:14:34 -0800

Arizona Diamondbacks C Peter O'Brien, who is likely to start the 2015 season in the minors, has impressed the coaching staff so far in spring, mainly for his power swing. The D-backs also think he's improved enough defensively to remain behind the plate.

Fantasy Tip: Unless the D-backs make a trade to acquire Dioner Navarro from the Toronto Blue Jays are look somewhere else, they're primed to enter the season with Tuffy Gosewisch as their starting backstop. O'Brien slugged 34 home runs in three minor league stops last year, and his power looks to be for real. He's strictly an NL-only option for 2015, but he could have some utility in daily games if he comes up at some point this season.

Diamondbacks | Archie Bradley tinkering with new pitch

Tue, 24 Feb 2015 13:43:45 -0800

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Archie Bradley is hoping a knuckle curveball can help carry him in 2015. "For a knuckle curve, you're not throwing it like a normal curveball where you're snapping your arm," Bradley said. "I was able to throw it at a young age, and it's just something that has been successful for me in pro ball." Bradley learned the pitch at a young age, and he can now successfully throw it for strikes. Manager Chip Hale said Bradley has put his up and down season in the minors last year behind him. A knuckle curve is a difficult pitch to throw, and Bradley acknowledged that if it isn't thrown correctly, it typically stays out over the middle of the plate.

Fantasy Tip: Bradley's struggles in the minors last year won't endear him to any fantasy owners in mixed leagues to start the season. Bradley must still win a rotation spot this spring, too. If he wins a spot, though, he might be worth a late-round flier if you're confident in his improvement. It's probably safer to take a wait-and-see approach with him in mixed leagues, though.

Diamondbacks | Aaron Hill looking good

Tue, 24 Feb 2015 11:02:20 -0800

Arizona Diamondbacks 2B Aaron Hill looks lighter on his feet this spring, according to manager Chip Hale. Hale thinks Hill is moving much better and is showing more range at second base.

Fantasy Tip: Hill had a disappointing season all around last year, hitting just .244 with 10 home runs and 60 RBI in 133 games. Expect him to bounce back slightly in 2015, making him worth a late-round selection at the keystone as middle infield insurance.

Diamondbacks | Daniel Hudson not being held back

Mon, 23 Feb 2015 15:34:42 -0800

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Daniel Hudson (elbow) is able to fully participate in spring training this year after recovering from his second Tommy John surgery. Hudson had three outings in relief at the end of last season. The Diamondbacks are trying to find a role that can keep Hudson healthy, but for now he's being stretched out as a starter.

Fantasy Tip: Keep an eye on Hudson this spring and the progress he makes. If he stays as a starter and wins a spot in the rotation, he could be worth an final-round flier in deeper mixed leagues. If the D-backs determine that he's better used as a reliever, he can be ignored in all fantasy leagues.

Arizona Diamondbacks 2B Nick Punto has decided to sit out the 2015 season, although he has not officially retired, according to manager Chip Hale.

Diamondbacks | Daniel Hudson preparing to start

Thu, 19 Feb 2015 17:44:11 -0800

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Daniel Hudson will initially get a look as a starter, according to MLB.com's Steve Gilbert.

Fantasy Tip: Hudson is in an open competition for one of three rotation spots behind likely No. 1 and No. 2 SPs Josh Collmenter and Jeremy Hellickson, respectively. Hudson totaled three appearances out of the Diamondbacks' bullpen in 2014 after successfully returning from his second Tommy John surgery. An innings limit should be expected if he captures a rotation spot, but that wouldn't prevent him from being a worthwhile late-round pick in NL-only leagues.

Diamondbacks | Mark Trumbo wins arbitration case

Thu, 19 Feb 2015 11:40:33 -0800

Arizona Diamondbacks OF Mark Trumbo won his arbitration case and will receive $6.9 million this year instead of the $5.3 million the team proposed.

Fantasy Tip: A serious foot injury held Trumbo to just 88 games and 328 at-bats last year with Arizona. He still managed to hit 14 home runs, though. Power is the asset that Trumbo will give you as an injury discount in the later rounds of mixed leagues. Be prepared to take a hit in the BA department, though, as he's hit .234 and .235, respectively, the last two seasons.

Diamondbacks | Addison Reed dealing with soreness

Thu, 19 Feb 2015 11:36:08 -0800

Arizona Diamondbacks RP Addison Reed (undisclosed) is dealing with some soreness and will be given a day or two off. He's not dealing with an injury.

Fantasy Tip: This appears to be a very minor situation to begin camp, but it's worth watching. Reed enters 2015 as the team's closer. Reed should be considered in the middle rounds of your fantasy baseball drafts for saves.

Diamondbacks | Chris Owings a bit behind

Thu, 19 Feb 2015 11:33:40 -0800

Arizona Diamondbacks SS Chris Owings (shoulder) will be a little behind in spring training, according to manager Chip Hale. However, Owings should be ready for opening day.

Fantasy Tip: Owings is an up-and-coming prospect that offers a sneaky mix of speed and power late in mixed drafts. If everything aligns, he's a candidate for a 15-15 season in Arizona.

Diamondbacks | Bronson Arroyo has no timetable

Thu, 19 Feb 2015 10:43:49 -0800

Arizona Diamondbacks SP Bronson Arroyo (elbow) has no timetable in his return from Tommy John surgery. He said he could be back in early July or early August. He's currently playing catch at 75 feet.

Fantasy Tip: The nature of Arroyo's injury alone makes him untrustworthy in 2015, and that's without factoring in his age. Leave him to the waiver wire and don't expect much from him at all this season.

Diamondbacks | Paul Goldschmidt fully healed

Thu, 19 Feb 2015 10:32:24 -0800

Arizona Diamondbacks 1B Paul Goldschmidt (hand) said his broken left hand is completely healed. He will wear a pad under his batting glove for extra protection this year.

Fantasy Tip: With his hand injury behind him, you should feel confident taking Goldschmidt in the top-five picks of fantasy baseball drafts. His power and batting eye are among the best in the majors.
