Free-agent driver Brian Vickers (Red Bull Racing) vows to find a team and ride for the 2012 Sprint Cup season. He will miss the Daytona 500 this year. "I'm right now sitting at home, but that's OK," Vickers said. "I've got some great ideas that I'm very excited about. We're working with and talking to several of the sponsors in exploring a lot of options. I'm not going to fill you all in yet, but some options I'm pretty excited about."

NASCAR | Rules tweaked at Talladega

NASCAR has tweaked several rules for the Sprint Cup race at Talladega Superspeedway next month in an effort to limit two-car tandem racing. The first change is an increase in the size of the restrictor plate that will be used in the race. The other rule change is an adjustment on the pop-off valve ion the cooling system that is expected to lower the maximum water temperature in the engines.

She will drive the No. 7 GoDaddy.com Chevrolet in the Nationwide Series. She will race in select Cup events with Stewart-Haas Racing with the intent to run a full Cup scheduled beginning in 2013.

NASCAR announced a new point system for all three of its top series Wednesday, Jan. 26, that should make the sport easier to follow, according to ESPN.com's David Newton. Under the new system, drivers will be given 43 points for first place, 42 for second and one point less for every following position down to last. The winner will be given three bonus points with one bonus point awarded for leading a lap and one for leading the most laps.

NASCAR officials are considering changing the current points system in favor of a simpler method that will award points per finishing position, according to The Associated Press. Forty three points would be awarded to the race winner and one point less for each ensuing position down to one point for the 43rd-place driver. NASCAR is also thinking of keeping a 12-driver field for the Chase for the Sprint Cup. However, the top-10 drivers following the 26th race of the season would qualify, with the final two spots going to the drivers with the most wins who are not already eligible for the Chase.

Auto Club Speedway will be 400 miles instead of 500 during the Sprint Cup race scheduled for March 27, according to SceneDaily.com's Bob Pockrass. "California is a place where you have engine failures and things like that because we run a really high RPM on the long straightaways. Shortening this race will kind of even things out engine wise as it compares to everywhere else that we race," Michael Waltrip Racing crew chief Rodney Childers said.

NASCAR has enforced a rule change that will not allow drivers to accrue points in more than one series for the 2011 season, according to ESPN.com. "A driver will only be permitted to earn driver championship points in one of the following three series: NASCAR Sprint Cup, NASCAR Nationwide or NASCAR Camping World Truck Series," driver Kenny Wallace said, reading his application. "Please select the series in which you would like to accumulate driver championship points. Choose one."

Hendrick Motorsports driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. said Daytona International Speedway is "real smooth" after the completion of a $20 million repaving project, according to The Associated Press. Twenty cars took part in a Goodyear tire test at Daytona Wednesday, Dec. 15. "They smoothed out all the bumps," Earnhardt said. "The track is real smooth. It's got a lot of grip. It reminds me exactly of what Talladega was like when they finished (repaving) it."

X Games racing star Travis Pastrana plans to debut in the NASCAR Nationwide Series next season with Pastrana-Waltrip Racing, according to ESPN.com's Marty Smith. Pastrana will own and drive Toyota Camrys. He will drive in at least seven Nationwide races next year and plans to increase his number of races to at least 20 in 2012.

Hendrick Motorsports driver Jeff Gordon and Richard Childress Racing driver Jeff Burton had a physical confrontation after the two crashed in the Sprint Cup race at Texas Motor Speedway Sunday, Nov. 7, according to ESPN.com's David Newton. "He said the sun got into his eyes. Then we got down into (Turn) 1 and I just drove up next to him to show him my displeasure of what went on and he just flat out wrecked us. He wrecked himself. It was pretty stupid," Gordon said. Gordon shoved Burton when the two met on the track after the crash.
