Washington Redskins news, rumors and injuries

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III can't blame his regression on injuries, according to former Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan. "I don't think getting hurt has anything to do with it," Shanahan told WJFK in Washington Friday, May 22. "I think what you do is you rehab yourself and you get better. ... You don't have to have great running ability to run the read-option. You have to be able to know when to slide, when to throw the football away, depending on if you're running or passing," said Shanahan.
Fantasy Tip: RG3 has the abilities to be a steal in the late rounds of 2015 fantasy drafts, if he's able to stay healthy and translate his game to head coach Jay Gruden's system. Griffin is worth a flier as a second quarterback.

Washington Redskins RB Alfred Morris enters the final year of his current deal, according to Spotrac.com. The Redskins selected RB Matt Jones in the third round of the NFL draft, which could signal an impending departure of Morris in 2016.
Fantasy Tip: Morris has been a workhorse for the Redskins in the last three years. His load was reduced under head coach Jay Gruden in 2015, which isn't a bad thing for a running back entering an age-27 offseason next year. Morris' current value is somewhat murky, but he's safely an RB3 in standard scoring.

Washington Redskins rookie RB Matt Jones said he's ready to compete with anybody who's in front of him, that being RB Alfred Morris. Jones added that he has a chip on his shoulder because of how he was underutilized in college.
Fantasy Tip: Jones will likely be second fiddle to Morris, but he can still play an important role in the Redskins' offense. Morris doesn't see a lot of action in the passing game, which is where Jones has impressed Washington's coaching staff and thrived. It sounds like Jones will have more value in point-per-reception leagues, but he could also see his fair share of carries in order to keep Morris fresh.

Washington Redskins RB Matt Jones will be helping take some of the load off RB Alfred Morris this season. "If you want to commit to running the football, you [got to] have a couple guys that can tote it," head coach Jay Gruden said.
Fantasy Tip: Morris has seen 85% of the carries for Washington over the past three seasons, so Jones will help keep him fresh. Gruden added that Jones has been impressive in the passing game, so he could very well be used in those situations as well. It's too early to tell how big of a role Jones will play, so he should be kept off fantasy roster for now unless depth is needed at running back. Morris should still be in the RB2 conversation as he has averaged 1,320.6 yards and 9.3 touchdowns.

Washington Redskins RB Matt Jones said that he loves the offense and has a chip on his shoulder after not being used properly while in college. "My college career wasn't what I wanted it to be (because) of the offense I was in," Jones said Saturday, May 16. "I love (Washington's) offense. I love getting downhill. I think that's what they drafted me for. I can add more size, more catching out of the backfield, more blocking. I feel like I can do it all and complement Alfred Morris at the same time."
Fantasy Tip: Jones has been earning his share of praise already, and while he is going to be a backup to Alfred Morris, it sounds like he will earn some touches of his own. He is worth a late-round flier in all formats, and he is smart insurance policy for Morris owners.

Washington Redskins OT Brandon Scherff was strong at the point of attack during drills at rookie minicamp, and head coach Jay Gruden said he will be given every opportunity to start at right tackle this season.

Fantasy Tip: If Jones can continue to catch the ball well, he could carve out a steady role in the offense as a rookie since Alfred Morris has never been much of a factor in the passing game. Morris is still the lead back, but Jones has enough fantasy upside to grab late in drafts.

Former Alabama QB Blake Sims was praised by Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden for his effort in trying out at running back, even though he played quarterback in college. Gruden said Sims looked like he's been playing running back for a long time and that he always makes the first guy miss.

Fantasy Tip: RG III appears to be the team's starter, but he'll have a short leash during the season. He's a midrange QB2 in fantasy.
