Rick Stroud, of the St. Petersburg Times, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik said the competition between QBs Luke McCown and Byron Leftwich is extremely close and indicated a decision might not be made until the end of the preseason. "It should be very wide open," Dominik said. "The competition still is ongoing. The important thing about what they did in the OTAs as a group is that they got a foundation of the offense and showed an ability to grasp it mentally and then go out and operate it on the field. That's why we're anxious to put the pads on and see how they do in the (preseason) games."

Rick Stroud, of the St. Petersburg Times, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik would prefer QB Josh Freeman not be the team's starting quarterback this season. Not right away, at least. "The ultimate goal is to let Josh Freeman sit back and learn," Dominik said. "I still think he's a 21-year-old quarterback who came out as a true junior. You'd like for him to grow and mature into his role and not be forced into it."

The team is looking for receviers to back up starting WRs Antonio Bryant and Michael Clayton. "We're going to let Brian Clark, Maurice Stovall and even Dexter M. Jackson compete and go from there," Dominik said.

The St. Petersburg Times reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers TE Kellen Winslow will be used extensively in the team's offense this year. Offensive coordinator Jeff Jagodzinski believes in a widespread use of his tight ends. The Buccaneers have a thin group of wide receivers that do not have a lot of experience, so the Buccaneers believe Winslow can help fill the gap and essentially serve as a third receiver. Winslow is playing at tight end and splitting out wide. He has also impressed his teammates with his catching ability and route running.

Stephen F. Holder, of the St. Petersburg Times, reports free-agent WR Plaxico Burress (Giants) is intent on playing this season, and it appears he wouldn't mind doing so for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Burress has reached out to RB Derrick Ward and others on the team to express an interest in joining them. The team is open to upgrading at receiver. Head coach Raheem Morris said there are obstacles, without talking specifics. "He's a great player," Morris said. "Any time you get a chance to add a great player to your team, you definitely have got to have some sort of interest. We don't know what's going on with his legal problems, we don't know what's going on with the suspensions in the league. Until we get all that stuff resolved, it's not even worth talking about."

The move, however, did not accomplish his goal. "I'd like to think everything will take care of itself, but that remains to be seen," said Rudd, the team's leading tackler the past two years. As reported, he may still opt to hold out of training camp if talks do not progress by then.

Ruud is not only one of the team's best players, he is also the leader of the defense, which is in the process of installing new defensive coordinator Jim Bates' scheme. "Of course we put a large emphasis into our offseason and our OTAs, and no doubt that Barrett has missed a lot of time," said linebackers coach Joe Barry. "…Especially now with there being a new system with new terminology a handful of new players and new coaches. I'd be lying to you if I said, 'Oh no, Barrett didn't miss anything. He'll be fine.' He missed quite a bit of stuff."
