49ers | Three to compete for starting WR job

Fri, 24 May 2013 12:32:28 -0700

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh said WRs A.J. Jenkins, Quinton Patton and Ricardo Lockette will compete for the vacant starting wide receiver job during offseason workouts.

Fantasy Tip: All three will have the chance to win the starting job and see an increase in their fantasy value. Jenkins and Patton likely should be considered late-round options in drafts this season. Owners should monitor Lockette's role leading up to their drafts since he could be worthy of a late-round pick in very deep leagues.

49ers | Ricardo Lockette close with Colin Kaepernick

Fri, 24 May 2013 10:20:11 -0700

San Francisco 49ers WR Ricardo Lockette, who is roommates with QB Colin Kaepernick, could be an intriguing candidate to step up with WR Michael Crabtree (Achilles') injured. Lockette is 6-foot-2, 211 pounds and constantly is being tutored by Kaepernick since they live together. "He's one of the fastest guys on the team, and I've been trying to keep up with him," Kaepernick said of Lockette. Kaepernick has helped Lockette understand and simplify the team's playbook, and he impressed offensive coordinator Greg Roman last year while making impressive catches on the scout team. Lockette, a former track star, considers himself more of an outside receiver that can take advantage of his size and speed. "I'm sure there's things I can specifically name, but there's just something about him that I'm really fired up about," coach Jim Harbaugh said. "He's got something else to him, too, besides just the analytical size, strength, speed."

Fantasy Tip: Lockette would be classified as a super sleeper this year, mainly because, even with Crabtree out, there are still a lot of names ahead of him on the depth chart. But Lockette's relationship with Kaepernick shouldn't be overlooked. Keep Lockette's name tucked away in really deep leagues.

49ers | Randy Moss not an option

Wed, 22 May 2013 17:12:45 -0700

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh said the team isn't considering re-signing WR Randy Moss after learning that WR Michael Crabtree (Achilles') tore his Achilles' Wednesday, May 22. Harbaugh said the team is intrigued with the depth of young receivers they have on roster, and they are looking forward to them stepping up to the task. WR A.J. Jenkins, the team's 2012 first-round pick, will have a chance to make an impact in his second year. Jenkins has spent the offseason adding muscle and working with QB Colin Kaepernick.

Fantasy Tip: Look out for Jenkins as a late-round pick this summer. With Crabtree out, it's possible he could become the team's No. 2 receiver behind Anquan Boldin if he beats out Mario Manningham. Kaepernick proved last year that he can make the receiving unit in San Fran valuable.

49ers | Have high hopes for Ricardo Lockette

Wed, 22 May 2013 15:44:47 -0700

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh has high hopes for WR Ricardo Lockette this season.

Fantasy Tip: With Michael Crabtree (Achilles') likely out for most, if not all, of the season, Lockette has a better shot at making an impact in San Fran. Still, he'll have a tough time seeing enough snaps to make a fantasy impact with Anquan Boldin, Mario Manningham, A.J. Jenkins and maybe even Quinton Patton likely in front of him in the pecking order.

49ers | Coach does not expect Michael Crabtree to miss season

Wed, 22 May 2013 14:37:14 -0700

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh said he does not think WR Michael Crabtree (Achilles') will miss the entire 2013 regular season.

Fantasy Tip: If Crabtree does return this season, he likely would only be back for the final few games of the regular season. Crabtree should not be on the fantasy radar until he is close to returning and probably would not make much of an impact when he does return.

49ers | Michael Crabtree could be out six months

Wed, 22 May 2013 13:05:03 -0700

Updating a previous report, doctors believe San Francisco 49ers WR Michael Crabtree (Achilles') will miss six months because of his torn Achilles' tendon. Doctors have recommended that Crabtree undergo surgery as soon as possible.

Fantasy Tip: There appears to be a chance that Crabtree could return near the end of the season or during the playoffs, but he probably would not be 100 percent when he returns. Owners should not worry about him until a possible return is close.

49ers | Michael Crabtree suffers torn Achilles'

Wed, 22 May 2013 11:15:17 -0700

San Francisco 49ers WR Michael Crabtree (Achilles') suffered a torn Achilles' tendon during organized team activities Tuesday, May 21, and will undergo what could be season-ending surgery.

Fantasy Tip: There is a strong chance that this will be a lost year for Crabtree because of the major injury. Anquan Boldin will become the No. 1 wide receiver and will have his fantasy value increase. Vernon Davis should become more involved in the passing game to fill some of the void, which increases his value as a No. 1 fantasy tight end. Mario Manningham (knee), A.J. Jenkins and Quinton Patton were candidates to win the No. 3 wide receiver job but are now options for the No. 2 wide receiver job. Boldin should be considered a weak No. 2 fantasy option or a solid No. 3. Manningham, Jenkins and Patton could be options in the later rounds of drafts.

Tue, 21 May 2013 18:08:04 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick and WRs A.J. Jenkins and Ricardo Lockette lived together for two months in Atlanta during the offseason, working together at a nearby training facility. And since the opening of the team's offseason program, WR Anquan Boldin has served as a mentor, helping the two receivers on route running after practice.
