San Francisco 49ers WR Quinton Patton (concussion) is expected to get through the concussion protocol Friday, Oct. 9, and be ready to play in Week 5 against the New York Giants, head coach Jim Tomsula said.
Fantasy Tip: Patton ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) might be ready, but he is still not a reliable FantasyScore option heading into the SNF game. Avoid.

San Francisco 49ers LB Ahmad Brooks (non-injury, shoulder) is listed as doubtful for the Week 5 game against the New York Giants. WR Quinton Patton (concussion) and OT Joe Staley (knee) are listed as questionable, while OG Alex Boone (shoulder, ankle), LB NaVorro Bowman (non-injury) and SS L.J. McCray (knee) are listed as probable. Brooks and Staley did not participate in practice Friday, Oct. 9. Patton, Boone and McCray were limited during practice, while Bowman fully participated in practice.

Fantasy Tip: McDonald ($1,700, 3.4% of cap) should receive a lot of snaps during the game since Vernon Davis has been ruled out. McDonald has caught only two passes for 12 yards this season and is not a great option for fantasy owners.

Fantasy Tip: Vance McDonald ($1,700, 3.4% of cap) likely will be the starting tight end with Davis sidelined. Owners should be able to find better options to use in their lineups.

Fantasy Tip: Even when healthy this season, Davis ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) has been a rarely used weapon in a struggling San Francisco offense. Look elsewhere at FantasyScore.

San Francisco 49ers LB Ahmad Brooks (non-injury) and OT Joe Staley (knee) did not participate in practice Thursday, Oct. 8. OG Alex Boone (shoulder, ankle), SS L.J. McCray (knee), TE Vance McDonald (chest) and WR Quinton Patton (concussion) practiced on a limited basis, and LB NaVorro Bowman (non-injury) was a full participant in practice.

Fantasy Tip: The 49ers have yet to get things going on offense in 2015, and Boldin ($4,600, 9.2% of cap) has historically not played well against the Giants. It might be best to avoid him at least for another week.

San Francisco 49ers LB Ahmad Brooks won't play in Week 5 against the New York Giants following the death of his sister, according to Brooks' agent Greg Williams. FantasyScore and USA TODAY Sports extends its condolences to family and friends.

Fantasy Tip: Davis ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) missed the last game but appears to be on track to play in Week 5. Davis has caught only eight passes for 109 yards in three games this season and may not be the best option for fantasy owners.

San Francisco 49ers WR Torrey Smith has nine catches for 185 yards on the season through four games, but two of those catches accounted for 122 of his yards, and he has one touchdown. Smith was seen storming off the field in a Week 4 loss in frustration, and San Fran has the No. 32-ranked passing attack with an average of just 158.8 yards per game through the air. Smith is averaging just 9.0 yards per catch if you take away his 75-yard touchdown catch in Week 2. He averaged 16.9 yards per catch with the Baltimore Ravens. "We need to use (Smith) more and we need to get him more involved," head coach Jim Tomsula said. "So again, that's on the checklist."
Fantasy Tip: It hasn't helped Smith ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) that Colin Kaepernick has regressed even further so far in 2015. Smith has always been more of a home run hitter, making him more valuable in standard than PPR leagues. The way the Niners offense is playing, Smith is a desperation dart throw on FantasyScore.

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick is still growing into the quarterback position as a pocket passer, according to former QB Kurt Warner, who mentored the Niners quarterback in the offseason. "I think the unfortunate thing for Kap is he's continuing to try to learn how to play the quarterback position," Warner said of Kaepernick. Kaepernick's total QBR is at a career-low 38.6 after four games with two passing touchdowns and a running TD, but all three of his scores have come with San Fran trailing by at least 25 points. He has five interceptions, no touchdowns and just six completions of passes more than five yards down the field in the last two games.
Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick ($6,200, 12.4% of cap) and the Niners have faced some tough opponents recently, but it's clear he's not comfortable yet in the pocket in this new offense. He should have a much easier time of it against the New York Giants in Week 5, but you can't trust him on FantasyScore until we see improvement.

Fantasy Tip: The Green Bay defense has been much improved this year, but Kaepernick has left plenty to be desired in 2015 after he spent the entire offseason working on improving his pocket and overall game as a passer. With the Niners encouraging him to live more inside the pocket, he has become even more unfriendly to fantasy owners so far.
