49ers | Jeff Driskel thinks he's perfect fit

Fri, 06 May 2016 10:54:31 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Jeff Driskel said he thinks he's a perfect fit for the 49ers. He said he's comfortable running the zone-read system.

"I've done it a lot," Driskel said. "Just about every offense I've been in, I've done the zone read. It's a play I feel like I'm good at. I got a good feel for what the defensive end is going to do. And have a good feel for hitting it up inside when the defense collapses on me. So it's a play I've done before in the past, and I know it's a part of the offense here."

Fantasy Tip: Driskel was taken in the sixth round and may take some time to develop. He doesn't have much fantasy luster as a rookie.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick's rehab on track

Thu, 05 May 2016 21:38:41 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) is doing an "awfully good job" with his rehab, according to general manager Trent Baalke.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick's dual-threat ability could allow him to thrive in Chip Kelly's system, but he is far from a sure thing. Draft him as a high-upside lottery ticket once you have a stable starting quarterback.

49ers | Jeff Driskel signs deal with 49ers

Thu, 05 May 2016 14:19:08 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Jeff Driskel signed his four-year rookie deal Thursday, May 5. The deal is worth up to $2.629 million, including a $112,540 signing bonus.

Fantasy Tip: Driskel will likely be the No. 3 quarterback behind Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert. He won't have any fantasy value in redraft leagues.

49ers | Kelvin Taylor signs rookie deal

Thu, 05 May 2016 10:10:12 -0700

San Francisco 49ers RB Kelvin Taylor signed his rookie contract Thursday, May 5.

Fantasy Tip: Taylor doesn't have a lot of imposing threats ahead of him on the depth chart behind Carlos Hyde. He'll have to battle Mike Davis, DuJuan Harris, Shaun Draughn, Kendall Gaskins and Jarryd Hayne. The downside is that is a lot of players to leapfrog. Taylor isn't worth drafting right now unless he tears it up in camp.

49ers | Jeff Driskel a fit for Chip Kelly's offense?

Wed, 04 May 2016 17:30:55 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Jeff Driskel's athletic ability impressed general manager Trent Baalke, and Driskel felt the 49ers would be a good fit for him because Louisiana Tech's offense had similarities to Chip Kelly's.

"Heck of an athlete," Baalke said. "You look at the numbers, he's a young man that's over 6-4. He's 237 pounds. He ran sub-4.5. Just a tremendous athlete that's played at two high-caliber programs. There's a lot to work with there."

Fantasy Tip: Driskel is a project quarterback who currently has Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert ahead of him on the depth chart. However, with a new coaching regime in San Fran and Driskel's intangibles, there is some keeper/dynasty value here. Driskel isn't on the redraft radar yet.

49ers | Blaine Gabbert showing leadership

Wed, 04 May 2016 12:54:41 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert has taken control of the 49ers' offseason program while QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) recovers from multiple surgeries. TE Garrett Celek said Gabbert is showing leadership and making good decisions on the field during workouts. "I think he's definitely developing more and more as the days go on," Celek said. "But, right now, we're all in the same boat learning this offense." OG Zane Beadles said Gabbert carries himself well in the locker room and acts like a professional, adding that Gabbert is always studying and trying to become better.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick is expected to start in head coach Chip Kelly's new offense once he's fully recovered, but at least Gabbert is playing the part and showing he can be a starter and a leader if necessary. Neither is a QB1, but Kaepernick is definitely the better fantasy option when healthy.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick resumes throwing

Tue, 03 May 2016 19:56:44 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) has resumed throwing a "bit", according to a league source Tuesday, May 3, and it appears he will stay with the team to compete with QB Blaine Gabbert for the starting job. Kaepernick was discussed in trade talks with other clubs, including the Denver Broncos, but after the 2016 NFL draft it appears he is now staying put. The Broncos added a quarterback in the first round, as did the New York Jets, another potential landing spot for Kaepernick.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick could flourish under Chip Kelly in his up-tempo offense, so it will be an interesting race to watch in training camp and the preseason. Blaine Gabbert isn't nearly as mobile. Whomever wins the job, they're still nothing more than a QB2 in most fantasy formats.
