49ers | Carlos Hyde must earning starting job

Tue, 11 Jul 2017 12:32:14 -0700

San Francisco 49ers RB Carlos Hyde will need to earn his starting job over rookie RB Joe Williams, according to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com. Maiocco envisions a committee approach with RB Tim Hightower also being involved.

Fantasy Tip: Williams does have some upside heading into his first year, but Hyde will start as long as he is in good health. Committees obviously hurt fantasy value, but Hyde remains a low-end RB1 to high-end RB2 candidate.

49ers | Brian Hoyer leading players' camp

Tue, 11 Jul 2017 12:24:31 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Brian Hoyer is heading what is dubbed "Camp Hoyer" prior to the start of training camp. At least 10 quarterbacks, wide receivers, tight ends and running backs attended workouts Monday, July 10, and Tuesday, July 11.

Fantasy Tip: Leadership shouldn't be a surprise from the veteran quarterback. It's a good sign that he and the offensive players are coming together, though, especially under a new regime. Unfortunately, Hoyer's leadership doesn't translate to fantasy football success. He's a bye-week replacement at best.

49ers | Aldrick Robinson should have role

Mon, 10 Jul 2017 15:09:02 -0700

San Francisco 49ers WR Aldrick Robinson has a chance to be a situational player with the ability to start if another receiver suffers an injury, in the opinion of 49ers.com's Joe Fann. Head coach Kyle Shanahan has worked with Robinson over the last few seasons.

49ers | George Kittle has impressed

Mon, 10 Jul 2017 12:21:26 -0700

San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle has made a good impression in his first offseason. General manager John Lynch said Kittle has flashed, catching the ball well and showing off his athleticism. "George gives us something we don't have as a playmaker down in the red zone," Lynch added. "He's exceeded our expectations."

49ers | Carlos Hyde a bad fit?

Fri, 30 Jun 2017 21:15:48 -0700

San Francisco 49ers RB Carlos Hyde averaged 2.5 yards per carry last season on runs designed to go outside the tackles, and Grant Cohn of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat believes Hyde is a bad fit for an offense run by head coach Kyle Shanahan, who calls more runs outside the tackles than any other coach in the league.

Fantasy Tip: Whether Hyde can be productive in Shanahan's offense remains to be seen, but he should have the first crack at leading the backfield and can be drafted as a RB2.

49ers | George Kittle impressive during spring

Tue, 27 Jun 2017 18:29:02 -0700

San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle was "one of the standouts of minicamp" and has "shown flashes of being a quality find" in the draft, according to 49ers.com's Joe Fann.

Fantasy Tip: Kittle saw first-team reps during minicamp and his roster spot is probably the safest among San Francisco tight ends. Given his proficiency as a blocker and receiver, it wouldn't be surprising if the rookie earned a starting job early in the season if not before. While Kittle is unlikely to have much impact in redraft leagues this year, he is a solid dynasty prospect.

49ers | Cole Hikutini eyeing roster spot and more

Thu, 22 Jun 2017 19:46:36 -0700

San Francisco 49ers TE Cole Hikutini has a legitimate chance to make the 53-man roster, according to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee, and Marrows believes Hikutini could climb up the depth chart if his knee is fully healthy.

49ers | DeForest Buckner probably will see less snaps

Mon, 19 Jun 2017 17:07:11 -0700

San Francisco 49ers DE DeForest Buckner played 1,005 snaps in 2016, but defensive coordinator Robert Saleh said he would like to see Buckner play around 500 to 600 snaps this season to make sure he can make an impact when he is on the field. Buckner said he was tired at times last season but would not be taken out of the game.

49ers | George Kittle make good first impression

Sat, 17 Jun 2017 08:15:18 -0700

San Francisco 49ers fifth-round TE George Kittle was the team's most prolific target during the recent minicamp and drew praise from QB Brian Hoyer for his football awareness and intelligence. "He has a really good football awareness, is what I would call it. A feel for where to break, how to break, read zones. I've been surprised and, obviously, it's a good thing for us to have a guy who has that football awareness and some feel of the game to it," Hoyer said.

Fantasy Tip: The more Kittle continues to stand out, the more likely Vance McDonald will not be on the roster come the start of the regular season. The rookie is being prepped to take on a hybrid tight end/H-back role and an above-average blocker as well as a receiver, so he figures to get a lot of snaps right away. However, that role isn't likely to translate to significant value right away in the 49ers' offense, so he can be left undrafted in fantasy.

49ers | Trent Taylor as advertised

Sat, 17 Jun 2017 08:03:08 -0700

San Francisco 49ers fifth-round WR Trent Taylor has been sure-handed in early workouts and "very good at shaking free of coverage with a quick, up-field step as soon as the ball arrived," according the Sacramento Bee's Matt Barrows.

Fantasy Tip: Taylor is currently the main backup to Jeremy Kerley in the slot, but San Francisco is almost bereft of playmakers at receiver after Pierre Garcon, so there will be room for the rookie to play major snaps somewhere right away if he carries his early success over to training camp. He's not an option in fantasy, however, as the quarterback situation puts a hard ceiling on his upside.
