San Diego Chargers news, rumors and injuriesFri, 14 Jun 2013 15:39:19 -0700 San Diego Chargers OG Chad Rinehart is expected to be the starting left guard this season. Share: Chargers | Robert Meachem has some hope to improve Thu, 13 Jun 2013 15:31:27 -0700 San Diego Chargers WR Robert Meachem is still buried on the depth chart, but this new offense gives him a shot to produce more than he did last year. Fantasy Tip: That won't take much, if he's given the chance in Ken Whisenhunt's O. Problem is, there are a ton of options at wideout, and it's a very open competition for targets. Danario Alexander and Malcom Floyd are the two best bets for receptions, and Eddie Royal, Vincent Brown, rookie Keenan Allen and Richard Goodman will complicate matters for the secondary options. Share: Chargers | Ryan Mathews says he's been average, makes changes Thu, 13 Jun 2013 10:33:33 -0700 San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews said he's "been just an average back." After bulking up last year in an effort to absorb hits more effectively, he has leaned out this year while also incorporating different stretches to stay flexible. Mathews is also studying more, specifically changing and working on understanding his blocking technique. Fantasy Tip: This doesn't protect Mathews from the presence of Danny Woodhead and Ronnie Brown, who both stand to take reps from him on passing downs. Mathews, however, could stand to make a solid fantasy profit if he falls to the middle rounds, in contrast to the early-round selections he's garnered over the early part of his career. Woodhead more so than Brown ranks as a late-board trial pick but could wind up earning handcuff designation as the year goes on. Of course, San Diego might jump into the Willis McGahee "chase," so that may change. Share: Chargers | Antonio Gates looks quick and fit Wed, 12 Jun 2013 17:03:15 -0700 San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates, who turns 33 next week, has looked quick and fit in workouts this offseason. He's been using his height advantage against defenders in non-pads work. Fantasy Tip: The tight-end class looks volatile this year, and Gates, in a new offense, could wind up being a value play in the middle rounds. Share: Chargers | Confident in Dwight Freeney Wed, 12 Jun 2013 16:53:20 -0700 San Diego Chargers head coach Mike McCoy is confident in OLB Dwight Freeney. There are concerns that Freeney is out of place if he's not a 4-3 defensive end, but McCoy said the veteran will fit in because San Diego often uses multiple looks on passing downs. Fantasy Tip: In theory, that would preserve some of Freeney's ability to get to the QB, despite the fact he's 33 years old. Still, there's a bit of fantasy intrigue to San Diego's defense for which you probably won't have to pay a big price. Share: Chargers | Danny Woodhead to have noteworthy role Wed, 12 Jun 2013 16:45:35 -0700 San Diego Chargers head coach Mike McCoy lauded RB Danny Woodhead for his versatility and expects him to be in a lot of offensive packages this coming year. Fantasy Tip: Not to say Woodhead will be the next Darren Sproles, but the former Patriot could have flashes of pass-catching domination as he did in the AFC East. Ryan Mathews is far from a sure thing, and Ronnie Brown is merely a reserve. Count Woodhead as an intriguing PPR depth back. Share: Chargers | Keenan Allen not limited Wed, 12 Jun 2013 05:31:49 -0700 San Diego Chargers WR Keenan Allen (knee) didn't appear limited at all in OTAs Tuesday, June 11. Share: Chargers | Manti Te'o talks to the media Tue, 11 Jun 2013 16:17:47 -0700 San Diego Chargers LB Manti Te'o has been largely shielded from the media since joining the team. He spoke with reporters Tuesday, June 11, saying he is in a perfect place and wants to be a three-down player. Te'o said nothing matters but what he does on the field and that his teammates only care that he is working hard. He also talked about the differences between college football and the NFL. "The speed, there are guys that are faster, but for the most part, speed isn't the biggest thing," Te'o said. "It's how everybody is technically sound. For young guys you've just got to learn. You can't just run off blocks, you can't just run through a hole. You've got to use techniques when you do the simple things. It's those guys who are great at this game who have mastered those little things." Share: Chargers | Three wideouts working way up Sun, 09 Jun 2013 17:03:19 -0700 San Diego Chargers WRs Keenan Allen, Richard Goodman and Robert Meachem did not rotate as starters during organized team activities (OTAs), but they are very much in the picture and pushing for roster spots behind WRs Danario Alexander, Vincent Brown, Malcom Floyd and Eddie Royal. Share: Chargers | Eddie Royal working in slot Sun, 09 Jun 2013 17:02:45 -0700 San Diego Chargers WR Eddie Royal has been working as the team's top slot option during offseason workouts. Share: Chargers | WRs work in rotation Sun, 09 Jun 2013 17:02:14 -0700 During organized team activities (OTAs), San Diego Chargers WR Vincent Brown (ankle) rotated with WRs Danario Alexander and Malcom Floyd for first-team reps. Brown, who is fully recovered from a broken ankle, is fully recovered and expected to see a pronounced role in his third NFL season. Share: Chargers | Philip Rivers thinks best play to come Fri, 07 Jun 2013 12:41:17 -0700 San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers said he believes his best football is ahead of him even though he is around the midpoint of his career. "I think my best football is ahead of me, I really do," Rivers said. "That's being optimistic, because we've had a lot of really good years. I am probably on the second half of my career, the back end, but I think I've got a lot of good football left." Fantasy Tip: Rivers has been a solid quarterback over the last five seasons but has seen his interceptions totals higher than normal the last few seasons. Rivers should be seen as a solid to low-end No. 2 fantasy quarterback with the chance for more if everything goes well. Share: Chargers | Dwight Freeney comfortable in new defense Thu, 06 Jun 2013 09:35:28 -0700 San Diego Chargers DE Dwight Freeney said he's comfortable in the team's new defense under coordinator Chuck Pagano. Freeney didn't seem comfortable with the Indianapolis Colts in a 3-4 defensive scheme last year, but the Chargers also run a 3-4. "I think the biggest thing was that, he was going to allow me to do a little bit of what I do," said Freeney, who will be used as an edge rusher on the right side. "It wasn't, 'Dwight, here, we're going to take you and put you in this thing and do things that you're not used to doing.' He said, 'You know what, we're going to put you in place to make plays, in familiar places, so that you're comfortable and you can just ball out.'" Fantasy Tip: Freeney has been in rapid decline the last several seasons, and a change in defensive scheme rendered him largely useless last year, as he had just five sacks. He probably won't be used on an every-down basis in SD, but he could be more productive in limited time if he's getting after opposing quarterbacks consistently. Still, he proabably is only worth a late-round flier in deep IDP leagues. Share: Chargers | D.J. Fluker agrees to terms Wed, 05 Jun 2013 13:01:35 -0700 The San Diego Chargers have agreed to terms with first-round draft choice OT D.J. Fluker on a four-year deal worth $11.4 million. The deal includes a $6.6 million signing bonus. Share: Chargers | Dwight Freeney reports for OTAs Wed, 05 Jun 2013 11:23:15 -0700 San Diego Chargers DE Dwight Freeney was present for organized team activities Wednesday, June 5. The team said Freeney missed the previous five OTAs because of previous commitments. Share: ![]() |
