Chargers | Keenan Allen looked explosive

Mon, 24 Jul 2017 07:34:24 -0700

Los Angeles Chargers WR Keenan Allen (knee) looked quick and explosive in offseason work. He's due for a monster season, according to beat writer Eric D. Williams.

Fantasy Tip: Allen has played just nine games the last two years and is coming back from a torn anterior cruciate ligament. The 25-year-old has ample upside and ample injury risk as a WR2 in fantasy.

Chargers | Mike Williams denies surgery talk

Sat, 22 Jul 2017 18:33:41 -0700

Los Angeles Chargers WR Mike Williams (back) denied reports that he could need season-ending back surgery. "I'm good," Williams said Saturday, July 22. "Everything good. The back situation. That was some false information being released. I don't know who released it but everything is good."

Fantasy Tip: Williams is expected to start training camp on the PUP list, and his recovery time remains unclear. The top-10 pick will have a chance to prove himself at some point, so his long-term potential is undeniable. However, he is looking more like a WR5 for this season.

Chargers | Melvin Gordon stayed busy in 2016

Sat, 22 Jul 2017 10:11:30 -0700

Los Angeles Chargers RB Melvin Gordon accepted 213 of the 234 carries handed out to running backs from Week 3 through 13 after Danny Woodhead was lost for the season in Week 2 and before Gordon got hurt early in Week 14.

Fantasy Tip: There are metrics that suggest Gordon is an inefficient runner, and the fact he has yet to crack four yards per carry for a season yet would seem to support that. A more likely explanation is the third-year back simply has been held back behind a poor offensive line. The Chargers dramatically upgraded their front five in the offseason, so 2017 should reveal whether or not Gordon is an elite runner. He's a solid mid-first round fantasy pick with the potential to be fantasy's top running back.

Chargers | Surgery off table for Mike Williams for now

Wed, 19 Jul 2017 14:28:13 -0700

Updating previous reports, Los Angeles Chargers WR Mike Williams' (back) back injury is improving, and surgery for Williams is not on the table at this time, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Williams probably will not be ready for the start of training camp, so owners will need to monitor his situation over the next several weeks to see if he will undergo surgery or if he will be able to return. He could be a No. 4 receiver if he is healthy, but owners may want to look for other options in their drafts.

Chargers | Mike Williams starting to run

Wed, 19 Jul 2017 13:32:44 -0700

Updating a previous report, Los Angeles Chargers WR Mike Williams (back) started to run this week and is feeling better after receiving an epidural in his back, according to a source. He is expected to start training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to monitor his status during training camp to see if he has a chance to play in 2017. Owners may want to avoid Williams in fantasy leagues because of his uncertain status.

Chargers | Mike Williams may need season-ending surgery

Wed, 19 Jul 2017 13:12:12 -0700

Los Angeles Chargers WR Mike Williams (back) may need to undergo season-ending surgery to repair a herniated disk in his back, according to sources. He recently received a second epidural in his back to see if he could return at some point during training camp, but the team are preparing as if he will not be able to return during that time frame. The team is still hoping that Williams will be able to avoid surgery.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to keep an eye on the situation to see if Williams will miss the entire 2017 season. He probably would be considered a No. 4 receiver if he was healthy but can be avoided if his health is in question. Dontrelle Inman would receive more playing time if Williams misses the season and can be a No. 4 or No. 5 fantasy receiver.

Chargers | Bolts TEs did not lack for work inside 20

Tue, 11 Jul 2017 19:22:38 -0700

Los Angeles Chargers TEs Antonio Gates (18) and Hunter Henry (16) ranked second and in a tie for third, respectively, in the league among tight ends in red zone targets. Both Gates and Henry were tied for second among all tight ends with seven targets inside the 10.

Fantasy Tip: While owners should not look for a repeat of these high-target numbers from either player given how many quality options the Chargers have at receiver now, Philip Rivers has long enjoyed throwing to his tight ends. However, Henry is in danger of being over-drafted this summer given his likely unsustainable touchdown rate of 4.5 (eight scores on 36 catches). Owners should view him more as a high-upside TE2 who will miss out on some red zone production because of Gates.

Chargers | Hunter Henry the total package

Sat, 08 Jul 2017 20:24:06 -0700

Los Angeles Chargers TE Hunter Henry's has rare awareness and ball skills and is poised for a long career, according to tight ends coach John McNulty. "You don't have to spell everything out A-Z for him," McNulty said. "He can catch the ball that gets in on him fast, and he makes the contested catches with big, strong hands."

Fantasy Tip: Henry is expected to be the No. 1 tight end this year, but with Antonio Gates hanging around to steal red zone targets, it could stop Henry from reaching his full potential. Consider him a low-end TE1.

Chargers | Tyrell Williams in select company in '16

Thu, 06 Jul 2017 17:37:15 -0700

Los Angeles Chargers WR Tyrell Williams was one of eight wide receivers in the NFL last year with at least 19 catches of 20 yards or more. The other seven were New York Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr., Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones, Green Bay Packers WR Jordy Nelson, Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR DeSean Jackson, Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antonio Brown, Oakland Raiders WR Amari Cooper and Indianapolis Colts WR T.Y. Hilton.

Fantasy Tip: Williams enjoyed a breakout campaign in 2016, ultimately finishing with 69 receptions for 1,059 yards and seven touchdowns. Of course, at least some of that had to do with Keenan Allen missing virtually the whole season, but even with the team's No. 1 wide-out set to be at full health for the start of this season, Williams certainly has potential to churn out another productive year in the Chargers' high-volume passing offense.

Chargers | Tyrell Williams had knack for big plays

Sun, 02 Jul 2017 18:20:29 -0700

Los Angeles Chargers WR Tyrell Williams' ranked fifth in the NFL with 13 catches of 25 yards or more last season, and he was one of eight receivers with at least 19 catches of 20 yards or more.

Fantasy Tip: Williams has the size and speed to continue making big plays, but with Keenan Allen currently healthy and the addition of Mike Williams, it could be tough for him to repeat last year's numbers. Target him in the later rounds.

Chargers | Travis Benjamin at full strength

Sun, 02 Jul 2017 18:06:04 -0700

Los Angeles Chargers WR Travis Benjamin (knee) is fully healthy heading into training after having knee surgery at the end of last season.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin has big-play speed, but consistency is going to be tough to come by as part of a suddenly deep receiving corps. He is a late-round flier in deeper formats.
