Cromartie said he couldn't turn and break on the ball the way he's accustomed to doing. "I did a couple of times," Cromartie said. "Just sitting out the rest of the season or sitting out until I was capable to play at 100 percent." "People haven't seen the best of me, not at all," Merriman said. "In the past, I would tell someone, 'I'm about to go out and just kill it this year.' Now I want people to just watch. I had enough doubters around before, and some people felt like I was talking (trash) or just talking too much. My thing is, now I'm just talking about what I've done and what I'm doing right now – not about what I'm going to do … I'm going to be me. If anybody thought I was good in the past, well, just wait. Smith said the defensive unit must improve in 2009 for the team to have success. "I'm not ignoring offense. I'm not ignoring special teams. I know we have a quarterback I love. But defense - dictating, nasty, competitive defense - sets the tone for your entire organization and your football team," Smith said. "That's the basis for winning. Until we fix it and come up with answers, I don't believe the San Diego Chargers will get where we want to go." Chargers | Tomlinson believes he can still be productive at 30 Stephen Hawkins, of The Associated Press, reports San Diego Chargers RB LaDainian Tomlinson said he believes he can still be productive even though he recently turned 30 years old. "That's the one thing that I'm eager to prove, is that doesn't necessarily go for every player. Turn 30, that doesn't mean that you can't play any more. There are some guys out there that defy the odds, and I'm eager to prove that," Tomlinson said. Chargers | Pull plug on potential Chula Vista site Matthew T. Hall, of The San Diego Union Tribune, reports the San Diego Chargers have pulled the plug on their courting of Chula Vista as a site for a new football stadium. It had been ongoing for 3 1/2 years. Chargers special counsel Mark Fabiani posted a story on the Chargers' official site saying the efforts are on hold because of long-known complications surrounding a power plant on the 130-acre bay front site under construction. The Chargers are looking at the city of Oceanside again, but an airport near the site could pose insurmountable problems. Chargers | Turner believes English can make big plays this season Casey Pearce, of Chargers.com, reports San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner said he believes LB Larry English has the ability to make some impact plays for the team this season. "He's got great character, great background and he's had a great offseason. He's got about six weeks of work in and he's been impressive. He's a natural pass rusher and I'm excited to get him in pads. He's a very strong player who is going to use his leverage real well," Turner said. Chargers | Hughes signs The San Diego Chargers have announced they have signed fifth-round draft choice CB Brandon Hughes to a four-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed. Chargers | Rivers entering contract year Nick Canepa, of The San Diego Union-Tribune, reports San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2009 season. Re-signing him has become a priority for the Chargers. Chargers | Police and courts: WR Vincent Jackson Brent Schrotenboer, of The San Diego Union-Tribune, reports San Diego Chargers WR Vincent Jackson had his request for evidence to be suppressed denied by a San Diego Superior Court judge Thursday, June 11. Jackson's attorney, Cole Casey, plans to appeal the ruling. Casey said he hopes this ends up in the federal court, because they believe Jackson's Fourth Amendment rights were violated through an unreasonable search and seizure. Casey has argued Jackson was forced to have blood drawn against his will after being arrested Jan. 6 on suspicion of drunken driving. Chargers | Reject developer’s proposal for new stadium The Associated Press reports the San Diego Chargers have rejected a developer's proposal to build a $1 billion stadium as part of a development of the land surrounding Qualcomm Stadium. Attorney Mark Fabiani sent the developer a letter Thursday saying the team wanted him to stop referring to the Chargers in promoting the project.
