Sam Farmer, of the Los Angeles Times, reports San Diego Chargers CB Antonio Cromartie said he considered calling it a season after suffering a fractured hip in Week 1 of last season. Cromartie said he couldn't turn and break on the ball the way he's accustomed to doing. "I did a couple of times," Cromartie said. "Just sitting out the rest of the season or sitting out until I was capable to play at 100 percent."

"People haven't seen the best of me, not at all," Merriman said. "In the past, I would tell someone, 'I'm about to go out and just kill it this year.' Now I want people to just watch. I had enough doubters around before, and some people felt like I was talking (trash) or just talking too much. My thing is, now I'm just talking about what I've done and what I'm doing right now – not about what I'm going to do … I'm going to be me. If anybody thought I was good in the past, well, just wait. Now I'm healthy."

I'm not ignoring special teams. I know we have a quarterback I love. But defense - dictating, nasty, competitive defense - sets the tone for your entire organization and your football team," Smith said. "That's the basis for winning. Until we fix it and come up with answers, I don't believe the San Diego Chargers will get where we want to go."

"That's the one thing that I'm eager to prove, is that doesn't necessarily go for every player. Turn 30, that doesn't mean that you can't play any more. There are some guys out there that defy the odds, and I'm eager to prove that," Tomlinson said.

Matthew T. Hall, of The San Diego Union Tribune, reports the San Diego Chargers have pulled the plug on their courting of Chula Vista as a site for a new football stadium. It had been ongoing for 3 1/2 years. Chargers special counsel Mark Fabiani posted a story on the Chargers' official site saying the efforts are on hold because of long-known complications surrounding a power plant on the 130-acre bay front site under construction. The Chargers are looking at the city of Oceanside again, but an airport near the site could pose insurmountable problems.

Jackson's attorney, Cole Casey, plans to appeal the ruling. Casey said he hopes this ends up in the federal court, because they believe Jackson's Fourth Amendment rights were violated through an unreasonable search and seizure. Casey has argued Jackson was forced to have blood drawn against his will after being arrested Jan. 6 on suspicion of drunken driving.

Defensive coordinator Ron Rivera, however, is an aficionado of the 4-3 defensive scheme and will blend some of his past into the team's defense. "I took some of the things I've done in the past and tried to incorporate it so it fit a 3-4 defense," Rivera said. "I didn't want to change the integrity of the defense. It's not something they haven't done. But it's a refinement of what they've done."
