"It may be fair to say that when he started the discussions and Todd's name was on his original list, I don't think he expected that Todd was the guy he was going to wind up hiring. Steelers | GM says owner not meddlesome

Thu, 16 Feb 2012 07:52:09 -0800

Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert defended his owner, Art Rooney II, by saying he is not meddlesome. Colbert added team decisions are made collectively within the organization. "Art Rooney obviously is the owner of the team and the president of the team," Colbert said. "Of course he's going to be in the loop on every decision as any chief operating officer would be of any corporation. I think to say he is meddlesome or dictating every decision I think is very inaccurate. A lot of decisions are made around here with a collective effort and, in our end, when we're talking about players, it's a collective effort between myself, coach Tomlin and Art, and that's the way we do business."

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger said he has started his offseason workouts earlier than usual. Roethlisberger began training at the team's facility last week. He talked to head coach Mike Tomlin about where he is in his career and about the future. "When I talked to Mike, I said I don't know how much longer I have to play, no one does; it could be two years, three years, it could be eight years. Who knows?" Roethlisberger said. "I'm hoping that I'm just starting in my prime. I've already been working out with (Garrett Giemont), our strength coach, already. I've never worked out this early. It's not like high-intensity, out killing myself, but I'm working out, I want to come to camp lighter than I've ever come, in better shape, because as you get to a certain point, a certain age in this football thing, your body doesn't recover like it used to."
