Pittsburgh Steelers news, rumors and injuriesFri, 24 May 2013 15:30:23 -0700 Pittsburgh Steelers OT Marcus Gilbert worked at left tackle during organized team activities this week while OT Mike X. Adams worked at right tackle. The two players could switch positions in the future so the team can see them at both positions. Share: Steelers | New blocking scheme in the works Fri, 24 May 2013 10:00:44 -0700 Pittsburgh Steelers offensive line coach Jack Bicknell Jr. is installing an outside zone, one-cut blocking scheme in organized team activities in favor of their old power and inside blocking scheme. The Steelers are changing their approach to take advantage of their big and nimble offensive line personnel. Pittsburgh got poor production from their running backs last year, and RB Jonathan Dwyer led the team in rushing with only 623 yards, the lowest total by a rusher in team history since Merrill Hoge ran for 810 in 1991. Bicknell had success with the blocking scheme with the Kansas City Chiefs last year. "We are going to be dedicated to the zone," RB Isaac Redman said. "We are still going to be a power team, but we are going to have this zone scheme in so we can keep the defense on its heels and keep them running." Fantasy Tip: This new scheme should make Dwyer more productive, but many wonder if he has what it takes to be an every-down back in the NFL. Le'Veon Bell and Redman will spell him plenty, probably. Dwyer, as a result, is likely nothing more than a midrange No. 3 running back. Bell is worth a mid- to late-round pick, too. Share: Steelers | Justin Brown signed Thu, 23 May 2013 13:00:39 -0700 The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed sixth-round draft choice WR Justin Brown to a four-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed. Share: Steelers | Two picks signed Thu, 23 May 2013 08:25:57 -0700 The Pittsburgh Steelers signed third-round pick WR Markus Wheaton and fifth-round pick CB Terry Hawthorne to four-year deals. Share: Steelers | Talking deal with Emmanuel Sanders Thu, 23 May 2013 07:21:18 -0700 The Pittsburgh Steelers have opened talks with WR Emmanuel Sanders about a long-term deal. Share: Steelers | Jarvis Jones limited Wed, 22 May 2013 14:34:15 -0700 Pittsburgh Steelers LB Jarvis Jones (hamstring), the team's first-round draft pick, was limited during practice Wednesday, May 22, due to lingering hamstring issues that he suffered while trying to prep for the NFL Draft. His injury isn't serious. Share: Steelers | Heath Miller uncertain about return Wed, 22 May 2013 12:24:18 -0700 Pittsburgh Steelers TE Heath Miller (knee) said he is happy with the progress he has made in his recovery from a torn anterior cruciate ligament but is not sure when he will be able to return. He said he has started to run as part of his rehab. He believes there is a chance he can be ready for the start of the regular season but will know more when training camp begins. Fantasy Tip: Miller's fantasy value is uncertain at this time because of his recovery. Owners should consider Miller a weak No. 2 tight end option because of the injury as well as the team's inconsistent offense. Share: Steelers | Ben Roethlisberger happy with offensive changes Wed, 22 May 2013 11:30:38 -0700 Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger has voiced his happiness over the direction of the team's new offense this offseason. "There've been some changes this offseason in some of the offensive philosophies, playbook and some things that I think are good," Roethlisberger said. "It's some compromise from all the different position coaches, the running back coaches, the line and quarterback coaches. I think we've taken a little bit of everything and made it a lot better." Fantasy Tip: It's unclear what changes were made to the offense by Todd Haley and the rest of the coaching staff, but things definitely needed to be altered after the offense had no consistency last year. Emmanuel Sanders must pick up some slack now that Mike Wallace is out of the picture, and the running attack must be more productive, as well. The new scheme may favor more deep passes after Big Ben complained of too many dink-and-dunk routes last season. Share: Steelers | Troy Polamalu says injury could have need avoided Wed, 22 May 2013 11:19:45 -0700 Pittsburgh Steelers SS Troy Polamalu (calf) said he believes the calf injury that forced him to miss more than half of the 2012 season could have been avoided. "There are times when people fall on my knee, and those type of freak accidents that can't be avoided. Last year was the first injury of my career that could've been avoided," Polamalu said. He has been dealing with calf issues since 2009, but found a physical therapist to break up the scar tissue in the calf. Share: Steelers | Troy Polamalu will attend OTAs Mon, 20 May 2013 17:22:02 -0700 Pittsburgh Steelers SS Troy Polamalu will attend the team's organized team activities that start Tuesday, May 21. Polamalu is in the best shape of his NFL career. Share: Steelers | Vince Williams signed Mon, 20 May 2013 11:15:02 -0700 The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed sixth-round draft choice LB Vince Williams. Terms of the contract were not disclosed. Share: Steelers | Uncertain if Troy Polamalu will attend Sun, 19 May 2013 18:34:47 -0700 Pittsburgh Steelers SS Troy Polamalu has a history of blowing off the voluntary portion of spring drills to train with his guru, Marv Marinovich, in the Los Angeles area. Last season, Polamalu went through most of the spring practice with his teammates - and then missed nine games with injuries. It's uncertain if Polamalu will attend organized team activities (OTAs), which begin Tuesday, May 21. Share: Steelers | New faces on defense Sun, 19 May 2013 18:34:14 -0700 When organized team activities (OTAs) open Tuesday, May 21, the Pittsburgh Steelers will have at least three new faces among the starters. LB Jason Worilds is in for the departed James Harrison (Bengals) at outside lineback, NT Steve McLendon is in for free-agent Casey Hampton at nose tackle, and CB Cortez Allen takes over for CB Keenan Lewis (Saints) at cornerback. Share: Steelers | Emmanuel Sanders projected to start Sun, 19 May 2013 18:33:28 -0700 Pittsburgh Steelers WR Emmanuel Sanders is projected to take over the spot of departed WR Mike Wallace (Dolphins) at split end, at least for one year. Share: Steelers | Jerricho Cotchery could have bigger role early Sun, 19 May 2013 12:38:23 -0700 Pittsburgh Steelers WR Jerricho Cotchery could have a bigger role early in the season as a possession receiver if TE Heath Miller (knee) is not ready to play.
