Philadelphia Eagles news, rumors and injuriesSat, 25 May 2013 09:51:25 -0700 Philadelphia Eagles offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland said OG Julian Vandervelde has received reps at center this offseason because he likes Vandervelde's size against nose tackles in a 3-4 defensive alignment. Share: Eagles | DC still not mentioning defensive front Fri, 24 May 2013 12:13:40 -0700 Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Bill Davis said the team is moving toward using the 3-4 defensive alignment but have not fully moved to the alignment at this point. "Multiple is the best way," Davis said. "I know you guys are tired of that answer. I know you want to hear one or the other or something. What we're doing here is we're taking that wide-nine 4-3 and we're moving in the direction of the 3-4, but where we stop is yet to be determined by the players we have." Share: Eagles | Jordan Poyer could push for starting job Fri, 24 May 2013 12:11:12 -0700 The Philadelphia Eagles could give CB Jordan Poyer the opportunity to compete for one of the starting cornerback jobs during training camp. Share: Eagles | Brandon Boykin likely will be nickel back Fri, 24 May 2013 12:07:08 -0700 The Philadelphia Eagles likely will use CB Brandon Boykin as their nickel back this season because he has had success at the position in the past. Share: Eagles | Two LBs will have to compete for spots Fri, 24 May 2013 11:56:05 -0700 Philadelphia Eagles LBs Jamar Chaney and Casey Matthews will have to compete for roster spots during training camp. They likely will show they can be a factor on special teams to make the final roster. Share: Eagles | Michael Vick says he's fastest QB Fri, 24 May 2013 10:44:58 -0700 Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick said he's still the fastest quarterback in the league, despite the presence of San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick and Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III. "These guys are young and they're fast and they're quick, the thing I do have is a very quick get-up," Vick said. "I really don't feel like there's a quarterback in the league who can beat me in a 40-yard dash. If somebody wants to set something up, I'll be more than glad to accept the challenge." Share: Eagles | DeSean Jackson could excel in new offense Thu, 23 May 2013 15:21:26 -0700 Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly confirmed that he prefers larger and taller players at most positions on his team, but he's in favor of protecting his smaller players like WR DeSean Jackson. Jackson touched the ball progressively less in each of his five NFL seasons in part because the team worried about keeping him healthy. Jackson only played in five games last year because of fractured ribs and only scored one touchdown. He hopes he can go back to being extremely productive in the team's new offense with larger players creating mismatches for their opponents. "I'm challenging myself to be able to play every position," said Jackson, who's been hinting all offseason that he could be lining up in the backfield as well. "There might be a play or a different position where I normally would not line up or be in, but the leeway of the offense gives us the opportunity to go inside and outside and things like that, so I'm taking advantage of the opportunity to learn the whole offense and be in different spaces throughout the game." Twelve of the team's receivers on the roster are 6-foot-1 or taller, including WRs Arrelious Benn (6-foot-6), Greg Salas (6-foot-1) and Riley Cooper (6-foot-3). Kelly hopes to make opponents pay if they decide to double team Jackson or jam him at the line of scrimmage. Having bigger receivers outside to block should also help the running game. WR Russell Shepard, an undrafted rookie, will have the same opportunity as Benn to prove himself. "I was on the front line on kickoffs, I played running back, I played quarterback, I played receiver," Shepard said. "So (the versatility) is giving me more of an opportunity of making this 53-man roster." Fantasy Tip: Fantasy owners should expect Kelly to try and involve Jackson more in an offense that should cater to Jackson's wishes to touch the ball more often and score more frequently. Jackson has been a frustrating play in point-per-reception formats in his career, but that could be changing. Until we know more about how he may be involved in this new scheme, consider him a midrange No. 3 wideout. Share: Eagles | DC says two doing well at move to OLB Thu, 23 May 2013 11:07:00 -0700 Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Bill Davis said DEs Trent Cole and Brandon Graham have done well in their transitions to outside linebacker. Cole and Graham have also received reps at defensive end during organized team activities. Share: Eagles | James Casey to be used in multiple spots Thu, 23 May 2013 10:07:21 -0700 Philadelphia Eagles FB James Casey, who was used primarily as a fullback for the Houston Texans, is expected to be used all over the place in head coach Chip Kelly's "Joker" offense. Casey had 34 catches last year, but he caught 111 passes in his final season at Rice. Fantasy Tip: With Brent Celek, Zach Ertz and Clay Harbor also in the picture, don't expect Casey to be used much as a tight end, let alone catch many passes. He won't be useful in fantasy leagues, unless some injuries clear the way. Share: Eagles | Zach Ertz not participating in OTAs Thu, 23 May 2013 09:44:01 -0700 Philadelphia Eagles TE Zach Ertz, the team's second-round draft pick, is unable to participate in organized team activities because of NFL rules until he graduates from college at Stanford. Fantasy Tip: OTAs are voluntary, but Ertz would have some valuable time in new head coach Chip Kelly's system, which figures to feature plenty of two-tight end sets. Brent Celek will be the main tight end at Michael Vick's disposal, so Ertz doesn't figure to get enough looks to be worth a draft pick. Share: Eagles | James Casey has surgery Thu, 23 May 2013 09:43:28 -0700 Philadelphia Eagles FB James Casey (knee) underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Thursday, May 23, and he's expecting to be back at practice in two weeks. The team expects Casey to be ready for training camp. Share: Eagles | James Casey to have surgery Thu, 23 May 2013 08:12:03 -0700 Philadelphia Eagles TE James Casey (knee) will have arthroscopic surgery on his knee and should be ready for training camp. Share: Eagles | Michael Vick will have to change in new offense Wed, 22 May 2013 15:58:11 -0700 Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick, who held onto the ball for an average of 3.07 seconds last year, will likely have to change in order to be successful in head coach Chip Kelly's new offense. Kelly, while at Oregon, preached that his quarterbacks were urged to get the ball out of their hands in 1.5 seconds. "I think there is a lot more to Michael," Kelly said back in February. "I think quarterbacks are a byproduct of their experience. But to sit here and say I understood the system that Michael's been in whether he's with the Falcons under Coach (Dan) Reeves or here, that depends on the system that you run. Some of the systems that they run they don't ask him to get the ball out quick. Do I think he can get the ball out quick? I think he's got an unbelievable release. It's up and out and it's quick." Vick has had success in his career in waiting for plays to develop down the field, but the new offense will be a stark contrast to that. To help him become ready for the new season, Vick spent time simulating running an up-tempo offense consisting of read options and even added some muscle to his frame. Vick also did some boxing training to learn how to avoid taking big hits. The early reports out of practice have been positive for Vick. Fantasy Tip: Vick will have some competition in training camp from Nick Foles, but we all expect this to be Vick's job to lose. He gives the Eagles and Kelly the most athleticism in this offense, if he can adapt to his new role. The work that Vick has already put in lends optimism to the chances that he can do this and become successful. How successful this offense can be against opponents is another story altogether, though. For now, consider Vick an intriguing late-round selection that has the potential to be a very good backup QB. Share: Eagles | Early prognosis on OLB roles Wed, 22 May 2013 10:03:49 -0700 Philadelphia Eagles OLB Connor Barwin will probably play three downs next year and has looked comfortable in practices so far. Trent Cole, however, doesn't look like a cozy fit in the team's new 3-4 defense. He won't be asked to drop back much but must learn to consistently set the edge, and the transition may be difficult. Brandon Graham is also a pass-rushing specialist, but Bill Davis' hybrid scheme probably fits him a little better for sack production. Fantasy Tip: While Barwin might have sneaky value if used properly, Cole and Graham have falling value in IDP leagues; this is a reminder that scheme can hide or remove a player's potential. Eagles | LeSean McCoy OK Tue, 21 May 2013 08:02:48 -0700 Updating previous reports, Philadelphia Eagles RB LeSean McCoy (knee) is OK after leaving workouts Monday, May 20, with knee discomfort.
