Patriots | Jacoby Brissett receives praise

Wed, 04 May 2016 10:32:47 -0700

New England Patriots QB Jacoby Brissett, a third-round pick, received praise from former NFL head coach Bill Parcells. "He's a Curtis Martin, Willie McGinest, Troy Brown type player. That's the kind of guy he is. That's what New England is getting," Parcells said when reached yesterday. "Those kinds, those Tedy Bruschi types, those players who've been successful he's very similar in his personal life to those kinds of guys."

Fantasy Tip: Brissett was an interesting choice for the Pats in the third round with Tom Brady expected to serve a four-game suspension to kick off 2016. But New England already has Jimmy Garoppolo, who they like quite a bit, to replace the future Hall of Famer to start the year. Brissett has an interesting makeup and may have a future at a position other than quarterback in the NFL. He's more of a project, though, and doesn't project to any fantasy value for years to come.

Patriots | Tom Brady has more time to appeal

Tue, 03 May 2016 13:52:16 -0700

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady's deadline to appeal his four-game suspension has been extended to May 23, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: For now the odds seem to be against Brady winning an appeal. Jimmy Garoppolo is expected to start the first four games of the 2016 season while Brady serves his pending suspension. Even with Brady likely out four games, he's still worth drafting as a low-end QB1.

Patriots | Malcolm Mitchell fits in New England

Sat, 30 Apr 2016 10:43:17 -0700

New England Patriots WR Malcolm Mitchell has the short-area burst the team looks for in receivers, and beat writer Mike Reiss believes the addition of Mitchell will give the team flexibility in handling the contract situation of WR Danny Amendola.

Fantasy Tip: The Patriots aren't exactly loaded at receiver, so Mitchell could have a chance to make an impact in the near future. He is worth keeping an eye on in standard formats and is worth drafting in dynasty leagues.

Patriots | Pats add another QB in Brissett

Fri, 29 Apr 2016 20:02:59 -0700

The New England Patriots selected North Carolina State QB Jacoby Brissett with the No. 91 overall pick in the third round of the 2016 NFL draft on Friday, April 29.

Fantasy Tip: Tom Brady is likely to be suspended for the first four games of the 2016 season, but Jimmy Garoppolo is expected to be the guy. Brissett has nice scrambling abilities, and his future may be at another position. However, he could eventually wind up as a decent QB in the NFL. For now, though, his fantasy value is rooted in the deepest dynasty leagues.

Patriots | Tom Brady talks with NFL unlikely

Wed, 27 Apr 2016 16:54:37 -0700

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady and the NFL are not expected to talk anymore regarding a settlement, according to a source. The league doesn't believe the NFL Players' Association or any of Brady's representatives have provided a reason to renew settlement talks. Brady's suspension was recently upheld by a federal appeals court and he is expected to miss the first four games of the regular season.

Fantasy Tip: Jimmy Garoppolo will stand in for Brady for the start of the season. Brady shouldn't immediately be viewed as outside of starting fantasy quarterback territory, either. He can still put up QB1 numbers in 12 games.

Patriots | Jimmy Garoppolo has made strides

Tue, 26 Apr 2016 06:14:32 -0700

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo has made great strides, according to head coach Bill Belichick. "The reps that he's gotten on the field in preseason games and in practice," Belichick said, "I think he's shown a lot of development - better understanding, quicker recognition and reading of the defenses, more awareness of what's happening on the defensive side of the ball, better communication, better understanding of the offense - really everything."

Fantasy Tip: Garoppolo may have to exhibit those strides as Tom Brady's four-game suspension was restored. Garoppolo probably isn't worth drafting, but he could be a matchup play the first four weeks if your starter gets injured. Then again, we're not sold Brady will sit.

Patriots | Tom Brady not accepting ruling

Mon, 25 Apr 2016 13:37:41 -0700

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady will not yet accept the court ruling of his four-game suspension, according to sources. He is mulling options with his legal team.

Fantasy Tip: This shouldn't be a big surprise, as Brady didn't go down without a fight before with Deflategate. For now we can anticipate that Brady will miss the first four games of the season, though. Even if he does miss that time, he's still worth drafting as a low-end QB1.

Patriots | Tom Brady's appeal chances not good

Mon, 25 Apr 2016 10:43:18 -0700

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady's chances of winning an appeal after his four-game suspension was reinstated are not good, according to director of Tulane Sports Law Program Gabe Feldman. "But Tom Brady's next step is to make an en banc appeal to ask the entire second circuit to hear that -- those are very rarely granted. And even more rare is the Supreme Court to hear this case. So Tom Brady is almost out of chances. I think any chance he has left is very slim," Feldman said.

Fantasy Tip: Brady's fantasy value takes a significant hit leading into the 2016 season. He's more likely a midrange QB1 now with a second successful appeal unlikely. Jimmy Garoppolo will now likely start the first four games against the Arizona Cardinals, Miami Dolphins, Houston Texans and Buffalo Bills. None of those four matchups have much appeal to use Garoppolo as a sleeper QB in daily formats.

Patriots | Tom Brady's suspension restored

Mon, 25 Apr 2016 08:54:58 -0700

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady had his four-game suspension from last season reinstated by a U.S. Appeals court Monday, April 25.

Fantasy Tip: Here we go again. If this holds, Brady's fantasy value will dwarf into the tail end of the midrange QB1 area. This doesn't mean he'll miss the first four weeks yet as he found a way out of it last season. So continue to monitor the story. Jimmy Garoppolo would likely start the first four weeks, but he would only be a desperation fantasy play if your starter suffered an injury.
