Patriots | Malcolm Mitchell limited so far

Sun, 13 Aug 2017 08:23:18 -0700

New England Patriots WR Malcolm Mitchell (knee) has mostly only taken part in individual-type drills early in training camp, according to ESPN.com's Mike Reiss.

Fantasy Tip: Mitchell flashed the talent as a rookie to be a contributor, but he now finds himself behind Brandin Cooks, Julian Edelman and Chris Hogan in the pecking order at receiver. As a result, he will be hard-pressed to be worthy of a roster spot in fantasy.

Patriots | Dwayne Allen comfortable with new offense

Sun, 13 Aug 2017 08:08:30 -0700

New England Patriots TE Dwayne Allen is running better than he was in the spring and seems more comfortable with the offense, according to ESPN.com's Mike Reiss.

Fantasy Tip: Allen is expected to fill the No. 2 tight end void left behind by Martellus Bennett, who finished last season with 55 catches for 701 yards and seven touchdowns in part because Rob Gronkowski was only able to play eight games. Also no stranger to missing games due to injury, Allen may be able to enjoy similar success if Gronk struggles to stay on the field again. The former Indianapolis Colts is well worth a late-round flyer as a TE2.

Patriots | James White, Dion Lewis co-starters

Wed, 09 Aug 2017 14:38:02 -0700

New England Patriots RBs James White and Dion Lewis are listed as co-starters on the Patriots' initial depth chart.

Fantasy Tip: Take this one with a grain of salt, a sizable grain of salt. The Patriots backfield is stacked, but White and Lewis are both passing-down, change-of-pace backs. Mike Gillislee is expected to be the actual runner, particularly in goal-line and short-yardage situations.

Patriots | Key Patriots to sit Thursday

Wed, 09 Aug 2017 13:56:20 -0700

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady, TE Rob Gronkowski and WR Brandin Cooks are not expected to play in the Patriots' first preseason game Thursday, Aug. 10, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: This shouldn't come as a shock to any. Playing stars simply isn't worth the risk early on in the preseason. This will have no impact on their respective fantasy values. As you were.

Patriots | Dion Lewis, James White listed on first-team

Wed, 09 Aug 2017 11:20:21 -0700

New England Patriots RBs Dion Lewis and James White are ahead of Rex Burkhead and Mike Gillislee on the team's unofficial depth chart.

Fantasy Tip: Unofficial depth charts in early August before even one preseason game has been played are usually pretty meaningless, but Gillislee on the third team is notable, even if he has been sidelined for approximately a week due to a hamstring injury. Lewis and White have been with the team longer than Burkhead, which likely explains why they "rank" higher. Burkhead is still the player to target here if Gillislee can't get healthy soon. White is a RB3 in PPR, while Lewis is worthy of a bench spot in fantasy.

Patriots | Mike Gillislee sidelined

Wed, 09 Aug 2017 10:58:58 -0700

New England Patriots RB Mike Gillislee (hamstring) has been "locked onto the conditioning field for the past few days," according to the Boston Herald's Jeff Howe. Gillislee also reportedly dealt with a similar issue during OTAs.

Fantasy Tip: All aboard the Rex Burkhead train. Gillislee has been considered the favorite for the LeGarrette Blount big-back role in this offense from the moment he signed with the Patriots, but head coach Bill Belichick has a long history of "next man up" and will not be afraid to promote Burkhead if Gillislee cannot stake his claim to the job. Ideally, owners will have an opportunity to watch this play out some more, but early drafters would be wise to use a late-round pick on Burkhead and bump Gillislee down a bit.

Patriots | Brandin Cooks putting on a clinic

Wed, 09 Aug 2017 09:14:42 -0700

New England Patriots WR Brandin Cooks has been impressive throughout the offseason, and he has put on "a clinic" against the Jacksonville Jaguars during two days of joint practices at Gillette Stadium.

Fantasy Tip: The narrative surrounding Cooks since he arrived from New Orleans via trade this spring was he was a one-trick pony who would get swallowed up into the Patriots' spread-the-wealth passing game and be highly inconsistent as a result. Cooks is anything but a one-trick pony and has 10-touchdown upside in an offense that has lacked his big-play ability. All in all, he should be considered a top-10 receiver and a value pick if he last until the third round in fantasy drafts.

Patriots | Dwayne Allen seeing a ton of red zone work

Tue, 08 Aug 2017 10:20:04 -0700

New England Patriots TE Dwayne Allen has been the recipient of "a ton of targets in the red zone" during training camp, according to the Boston Globe's Ben Volin.

Fantasy Tip: Martellus Bennett's TE10 finish last year in PPR leagues - albeit helped by the amount of time Rob Gronkowski missed - should be enough proof for owners that New England can have two tight ends worth using in fantasy. Allen's biggest problem throughout his career has been staying healthy, however, so he figures to remain a highly volatile TE2.

Patriots | Tom Brady, Brandin Cooks building chemistry

Mon, 07 Aug 2017 14:51:11 -0700

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady said he has been working with WR Brandin Cooks during training camp so they can work on building a better chemistry.

Fantasy Tip: The Patriots added Cooks this offseason, and he should be a big part of the passing game this season. He has posted at least 1,100 yards in each of the last two seasons and has 17 touchdowns during that span. Cooks should be considered a solid No. 2 receiver in all fantasy leagues. Brady will have plenty of weapons to work with and will be No. 1 quarterback in all leagues.

New England Patriots WR Matthew Slater (undisclosed) did not participate in practice Monday, Aug. 7.

Patriots | Jacoby Brissett in jeopardy

Mon, 07 Aug 2017 04:07:30 -0700

New England Patriots QB Jacoby Brissett is in danger of being cut. With QB Tom Brady and QB Jimmy Garoppolo having strong performances and Brissett having a subpar spring, the Patriots may shore up another part of the roster.

Patriots | Rex Burkhead getting work in short-yardage

Fri, 04 Aug 2017 09:35:04 -0700

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead was reportedly "chased by head coach Bill Belichick and Bill Belichick alone" and was signed in large part due to his versatility. So far in camp, the team hasn't been shy about trying him in short-yardage situations down at the goal line.

Fantasy Tip: Burkhead is the most versatile of the Patriots' top running backs and appears to be fighting Dion Lewis for the tweener role in the offense, meaning he will play when the team isn't using Mike Gillislee on early downs/short-yardage or James White on passing downs. The fact he can excel in both areas, however, probably makes him the top backup in every situation. Gillislee remains the favorite to be the best fantasy play, but that cannot be taken for granted. Burkhead needs to be drafted in virtually all leagues.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski using Tom Brady's trainer

Thu, 03 Aug 2017 05:47:47 -0700

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski has hired QB Tom Brady's personal trainer, Alex Guerrero, and has adopted Brady's workout and diet plan. "I look at (Brady) and he turns 40 tomorrow and he runs around like he's younger than me. So it's pretty obvious right there," Gronkowski said after practice Wednesday, Aug. 2, while acknowledging his body already feels different.

Fantasy Tip: The article also suggests that the team could adjust the high-risk seam routes that Gronk and Brady have made their bread and butter. Gronk has had several back surgeries, forearm surgeries and reconstructive knee surgery at 28. The clock could be ticking on his stranglehold as the No. 1 tight end in fantasy, but this light bulb going off in him is a good sign for his longevity.
