Patriots | Dont'a Hightower could get transition tag

Sun, 19 Feb 2017 12:04:05 -0800

New England Patriots impending free-agent LB Dont'a Hightower may be more likely to receive the transition tag than the franchise tag if the Patriots decide to use a tag on him, in the opinion of ESPNBoston.com's Mike Reiss. Hightower would receive around $11 million if he receives the transition tag and the Patriots would have the first right of refusal if another team signed him. The franchise tag would be worth between $14.5 million and $15 million, which may be too rich for the Patriots.

Patriots | Michael Floyd gets jail sentence

Fri, 17 Feb 2017 13:00:17 -0800

New England Patriots WR Michael Floyd was sentenced Friday, Feb. 17, after pleading guilty to his extreme DUI charge. He will have to spend 120 days in jail, 24 of which to be served in Maricopa County Jail and the other 96 to be served under house arrest. In addition, Floyd must pay a $5,115 fine and complete 30 hours of community service. The other six charges against him were dismissed.

Fantasy Tip: It's been a significant fall from grace for Floyd, someone who was flirting with regular WR2 status in many leagues as recent as the 2015 season. The former Cardinal will serve all of his jail time during the offseason, but he's also an impending free agent that will be facing a suspension from the NFL as well, not to mention the fact he's coming off a down campaign. Floyd has ways to go to become fantasy relevant again.

Patriots | Tom Brady extension possible

Thu, 16 Feb 2017 06:27:31 -0800

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady has expressed mutual interest in a new contract with the team, according to source. Talks are in preliminary stages. Brady is signed through 2019. He will earn $1 million in 2017, but he has a $14 million salary cap number.

Fantasy Tip: Brady was fifth in fantasy points per game among quarterbacks last season and had a ridiculous 28-to-2 touchdown-to-pick ratio. He remains an elite option at quarterback in fantasy.

Patriots | Jimmy Garoppolo draws praise

Wed, 15 Feb 2017 19:51:18 -0800

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo was compared to Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers and Hall of Fame QB Brett Favre by Patriots WR Julian Edelman during a Tuesday, Feb. 14, appearance on NFL Network. "The guy is a stud. He went out and played in the regular season and played very well. He has that kind of gunslinger-like confidence, that Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers kind of confidence," Edelman said. Garoppolo is entering the final year of his rookie deal.

Fantasy Tip: Garoppolo obviously has no immediate fantasy worth sitting behind Tom Brady, so the only path to fantasy draft value before the 2017 season is a trade.

Patriots | Martellus Bennett may not re-sign

Mon, 13 Feb 2017 15:39:43 -0800

The New England Patriots are interested in re-signing impending free-agent TE Martellus Bennett but may not be willing to get into a bidding war for him if other teams are interested, in the opinion of ESPNBoston.com's Mike Reiss.

Fantasy Tip: Bennett should receive interest from teams as long as he recovers from the injuries he suffers during the season. He should be considered a low-end No. 1 or a No. 2 fantasy tight end next season depending on his role.

Patriots | Jimmy Garoppolo to fetch Day 2 draft pick?

Sun, 12 Feb 2017 10:29:24 -0800

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo is expected to attract a second-round selection from interested teams this offseason, according to the Boston Globe's Ben Volin.

Fantasy Tip: There have been reports that Garoppolo's price tag may be as high as a first- and fourth-rounder, but this sounds more reasonable. Volin notes that Matt Cassel, Kevin Kolb, Matt Schaub were traded under similar circumstances and all fetched second-round picks. Regardless of where he lands, he'll probably settle in as a low-end QB2 in fantasy.

Patriots | Danny Amendola will need to take pay cut

Sun, 12 Feb 2017 10:18:51 -0800

New England Patriots WR Danny Amendola is due $6 million in base salary in 2017, but it is a "certainty" he will not be returning under the turn of his current contract, according to ESPN.com's Mike Reiss.

Fantasy Tip: Amendola keeps producing in big games and the team obviously trusts him in those spots (eight catches for 78 yards, a touchdown and a game-tying two-point conversion in Super Bowl LI), but he is the No. 4 receiver on the team behind Julian Edelman, Chris Hogan and Malcolm Mitchell. As a result, he'll probably need to take another sizable pay cut like he has each of the last two years in order to remain in Foxboro. He can be ignored in most fantasy leagues.

Patriots | Julian Edelman productive on road

Sat, 11 Feb 2017 12:44:24 -0800

New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman caught all three of his touchdowns on the road this season. He finished the season with 43 receptions and 522 yards at home while catching 55 receptions for 584 yards on the road.

Fantasy Tip: Edelman had a slow period near the beginning of the season but finished strong with at least 75 yards in seven of the last eight regular season games. He should continue to be the No. 1 receiver for the Patriots and can be a No. 2 or No. 3 receiver for fantasy owners.

Patriots | No INTs on road for Tom Brady

Sat, 11 Feb 2017 12:43:42 -0800

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady threw for 1,973 yards, 18 touchdowns and zero interceptions on the road this season. He threw for 1,581 yards, 10 touchdowns and two interceptions at home.

Fantasy Tip: Brady played great after serving his four-game suspension and finished the season with another Super Bowl win. He will continue to be the starting quarterback for the Patriots as long as he wants and should be a No. 1 quarterback in all fantasy leagues.

Thu, 09 Feb 2017 13:28:13 -0800

When asked if Hightower would take less money to stay with the Patriots, Hightower only said "we'll see," and that he has a long process to go through.
