Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles may be a candidate to be released this offseason because he is scheduled to make $7 million in 2017 and dealt with knee injuries this season. Charles could return if the two sides can agree on a restructured contract.
Fantasy Tip: Charles was limited to 40 yards on 12 carries during the season and has dealt with injuries in the past, so he could hit the free-agent market this offseason. It is not known if Charles will be a starting running back in 2017 but he should have a solid role for a team. Charles probably can be a No. 2 or No. 3 fantasy running back depending on his role.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith was given a vote of confidence Monday, Jan. 16, in regards to holding onto the starting job in 2017. Head coach Andy Reid told reporters: "Do I still think we can win with Alex? Yeah, we were right there."
Fantasy Tip: With weapons like Travis Kelce, Jeremy Maclin and Tyreek Hill, a less risk-averse quarterback might be able to put up low-end QB1 numbers in Kansas City. Instead, Reid is apparently willing to live through another season of conservative offense and presumably another short playoff stay with Smith as his guy. The Chiefs would be wise to at least consider the heir apparent at the position in April's draft.

Fantasy Tip: Kelce is a decent TE1 option as long as Alex Smith is at quarterback, because Smith and Kelce have developed a pretty strong rapport together. To get that many yards against the Steelers' vaunted defense is a nice accomplishment.

Fantasy Tip: It's clear Pittsburgh knew Hill would be a prominent part of Kansas City's offense and acted to shut him down. The gambit worked. Hill may be a decent WR2 candidate heading into next season, but draft him as a return specialist if you can. Leagues with KR or PR positions will benefit greatly.

Fantasy Tip: Ware's low output was the result of Pittsburgh's stifling run defense, which forced Alex Smith to have to throw more. There was some success on both the running and passing game, but Ware will likely go back into a reduced role next year with Jamaal Charles likely returning. He might make a good handcuff pick, however.

Fantasy Tip: It's hard to tell whether Smith was hampered by the Steelers' solid defense or by the weather conditions, but Kansas City's offense had one passing touchdown and one rushing score. Smith has some limitations that make him no better than a QB2 in most drafts entering 2017, but it could be much worse for the Chiefs.

Fantasy Tip: Ware received two weeks to rest his injured rib and should receive his normal workload against the Steelers. He will be facing an improved Steelers defense but can be considered a low-end No. 1 or a No. 2 running back in fantasy leagues.
