The Houston Texans are unlikely to use the franchise tag in 2017, according to Aaron Wilson, of the Houston Chronicle. Houston has approximately $25 million in projected salary cap space, which limits the ability to use the franchise tag.

Houston Texans impending free-agent CB A.J. Bouye likely will not receive the franchise tag this offseason because of the team's salary cap situation. The Texans are expected to have around $25 million in salary cap space available, but Bouye would be scheduled to receive a little more than $14 million in 2017 if he received the franchise tag.

Fantasy Tip: Novak made 85.4 percent of his field goal attempts this season and was tied for second in the NFL with 35 field goals made. Novak could be a starting option in deeper leagues but may not be a weekly option in standard leagues.

Houston Texans LB Benardrick McKinney led the team with 129 tackles, and he was the only player in the NFL with at least 100 tackles and five sacks. General manager Rick Smith said McKinney still has another level to reach.

Fantasy Tip: Despite Kubiak's optimism, Osweiler likely played himself into a quarterback competition with his poor performance this season. Even if he breaks camp as the starter, he doesn't need to be drafted.

Updating previous reports, Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler and QB Tom Savage will compete, likely with a quarterback from the 2017 NFL draft, for the starting spot next season, according to owner Bob McNair. The Texans could draft a quarterback in the first or second rounds.
Fantasy Tip: Osweiler or Savage would be a backup in fantasy if they win the job. There are some players to work with at the skill positions, and either could be a matchup play.

Fantasy Tip: Osweiler was bench near the end of the season because of his performance but did play the last few games because of an injury to Tom Savage. He probably will have to compete for the starting job during training camp but can be avoided in fantasy leagues if he wins the job.

Fantasy Tip: Hopkins had a disappointing 2016 season and finished with 954 yards and four touchdowns during the regular season. He played better during the playoffs with 11 catches for 132 yards and one touchdown in two games. He will continue to be the team's top receiver in the passing game in 2017 and can be a low-end No. 1 or a No. 2 receiver in leagues depending on the quarterback situation.

Fantasy Tip: Savage started a few games at the end of the season but was sidelined during the playoffs because of a concussion. He probably would have to compete with Brock Osweiler and maybe another quarterback during training camp, but the winner of the job should be avoided by fantasy owners.

Updating an earlier report, Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt (back) said he has been cleared for football activities, and he'll be ready for organized team activities. He said he'd probably have a separate program, though, to be on the safe side.
Fantasy Tip: Watt had two back surgeries and another one on his groin in 2016. He was the top DL option in fantasy heading into last year, but Khalil Mack bridged the gap. If Mack is eligible at DL next season, he and Watt could be interchangeable atop the position heading into drafts.

Fantasy Tip: Watt underwent two back surgeries and a groin operation in 2016, and the back operations cast some doubt on whether he'll be able to return to his elite level. He was, hands down, the best defensive lineman in fantasy before the latest injury. If Khalil Mack is eligible at DL, he could be that guy this year. However, Watt is still an elite option with a big caution flag.
