Texans | Houston only option for Tony Romo?

Fri, 24 Mar 2017 13:53:21 -0700

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo believes the Houston Texans and retirement are his options next season if he is released by the Cowboys, according to sources. The Denver Broncos are not pursing Romo, but they are not ruling out the possibility of signing him.

Fantasy Tip: Romo is still part of the Cowboys at this point, but he likely will be released at some point this offseason. He would be the starting quarterback if he joins the Texans and could be a low-end No. 1 fantasy quarterback in 2017 if he plays for Houston.

Texans | Texans not interested in Jay Cutler

Tue, 21 Mar 2017 20:45:21 -0700

The Houston Texans "aren't an option" for free-agent QB Jay Cutler (Bears), according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com. As a result, Cutler "may just wait."

Fantasy Tip: That's unfortunate for the 11-year veteran, as Houston houses one of the few starting quarterback vacancies around the league. Cutler should have no problem latching on somewhere eventually, but the longer his search goes, the more unlikely it is that he'll be any sort of valuable contributor to fantasy teams in 2017.

Texans | Houston likely to draft a quarterback

Sun, 12 Mar 2017 10:29:03 -0700

The Houston Texans are expected to take a quarterback in the 2017 NFL Draft even if they eventually acquire Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo at some point this offseason, according to the Houston Chronicle's John McClain. Texans head coach Bill O'Brien has shown a preference for quarterbacks with size and arm strength, making Notre Dame's DeShone Kizer and Texas Tech's Patrick Mahomes likely targets.

Fantasy Tip: Romo will be viewed as a one- or two-year stopgap at best if he eventually becomes a Texan, which may serve as the perfect amount of time to get either Kizer or Mahomes ready to be a NFL starter. Houston owns the No. 25 pick in April's draft.

Texans | Ryan Griffin staying in Houston

Sat, 11 Mar 2017 15:40:15 -0800

The Houston Texans re-signed free-agent TE Ryan Griffin (Texans) to a three-year contract, $9 million contract Saturday, March 11, including $3.2 million guaranteed.

Fantasy Tip: Griffin will resume tag-team duties with C.J. Fiedorowicz. Coming off a career-high 50 catches last season, Griffin is a poor bet to repeat that number with Brock Osweiler no longer around to check it down. The University of Connecticut product does not need to be drafted in fantasy this spring and summer.

Texans | Texans bring back Nick Novak

Tue, 07 Mar 2017 18:30:51 -0800

Houston Texans impending free-agent PK Nick Novak re-signed with the team Tuesday, March 7, according to sources not authorized to speak publicly. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Fantasy Tip: Believe it or not, Novak was one of Houston's most valuable players last season, making the second-most field goals in all of football (35) and converting on 85.4 percent of his attempts. If Brock Osweiler remains the starter under center, the Texans should have plenty of drives stall in field-goal range, which should help Novak sustain his usefulness in 2017.

Texans | Tom Savage could wind up in San Francisco

Mon, 06 Mar 2017 23:03:10 -0800

Houston Texans QB Tom Savage could end up with the San Francisco 49ers via trade if Houston ends up acquiring Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo at some point this offseason.

Fantasy Tip: It's no secret the 49ers are looking for a new starting quarterback, so it appears a possible Romo-to-Houston move would be the domino that triggers the 49ers then going after Savage. It wouldn't exactly be a high-ceiling acquisition but Savage did impress a bit when he got to start at the end of the year for the Texans. However, the 49ers would have to improve their offense more for Savage to draw serious consideration in fantasy, even as just a QB2.
