Packers | Ty Montgomery placed on PUP

Mon, 25 Jul 2016 23:11:36 -0700

The Green Bay Packers placed WR Ty Montgomery (ankle) was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list Monday, July 25.

Fantasy Tip: Montgomery's ankle has reportedly been improving, so he shouldn't last on the PUP list long. The Packers are deep at the receiver position, but he is in the mix for a No. 3 or 4 job. On most teams, that's not terribly attractive from a fantasy perspective, but with Aaron Rodgers at the helm he is worth a look in the later rounds in most fantasy leagues.

Packers | Some Packers may not practice

Mon, 25 Jul 2016 11:19:27 -0700

Green Bay Packers WR Jordy Nelson (knee) and TE Jared Cook (foot) and others may initially be held out of training camp practices.

Fantasy Tip: It would behoove the Packers to take it easy with Nelson, who is coming off a torn anterior cruciate ligament. If Nelson doesn't suffer any setbacks, though, he's primed for another WR1 season. Meanwhile, it's still unclear if Cook will be starting at tight end for Green Bay. Richard Rodgers could take that spot, but neither should be pursued as a fantasy starter.

Packers | Aaron Rodgers in great shape

Mon, 25 Jul 2016 11:09:29 -0700

Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers is in the best shape of his football career, according to head coach Mike McCarthy. Rodgers stopped eating dairy this offseason as part of a more stringent diet.

Fantasy Tip: A healthy Aaron Rodgers is a good Aaron Rodgers. Not only is he in good shape, but he'll have his top receiver back in Jordy Nelson. As is the case in most seasons, Rodgers should be one of the first quarterbacks taken in fantasy drafts.

Packers | James Starks a red-zone weapon?

Fri, 22 Jul 2016 22:43:19 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks' ability on screen passes makes him a weapon in the red zone, running backs coach Ben Sirmans said.

Fantasy Tip: Starks' ability as a pass-catcher should earn him a steady role in the offense and make him a RB3 candidate, especially in PPR formats. His value could receive a further boost if Eddie Lacy can't stay in shape and falls out favor.

Packers | Eddie Lacy must impact passing game

Fri, 22 Jul 2016 22:31:32 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy will be pushed into the passing game, according to running backs coach Ben Sirmans, but Sirmans said Lacy will have to beat man coverage. Last year, RB James Starks played 68 more snaps than Lacy and caught 27 more passes.

Fantasy Tip: Lacy's inability to stay in shape has opened the door for Starks to take on a bigger role. Both backs are RB3 candidates, but Starks is the better bet in PPR formats.

Packers | Jordy Nelson ahead of schedule

Thu, 21 Jul 2016 20:41:20 -0700

Green Bay Packers WR Jordy Nelson (knee) appears to be ahead of the curve in his rehabilitation, and Nelson said he would have been able to play in the Super Bowl last year had the Packers qualified.

Fantasy Tip: Any player coming off a major knee injury carries some risk, but Nelson has too much upside as Aaron Rodgers' go-to weapon to slip past the second round.

Packers | Richard Rodgers starter over Jared Cook?

Thu, 21 Jul 2016 16:44:40 -0700

Green Bay Packers TE Richard Rodgers is expected to start over TE Jared Cook, not just in 2016, but for the next few seasons, according to Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. An advantage Rodgers has this season is that he is in better shape after weighing up to 272 pounds last year.

Fantasy Tip: The tight end position has been fairly underwhelming in Green Bay for a few years now. Rodgers and Cook could very well play as a committee together when all is said and done. Neither should be drafted as a starting fantasy tight end.

Packers | John Kuhn unlikely to be re-signed

Tue, 19 Jul 2016 15:33:51 -0700

Free-agent FB John Kuhn (Packers) appears to be in the Green Bay Packers' rearview mirror and is not expected to re-sign. FB Aaron Ripkowski is expected to take over starting fullback duties.

Packers | Eddie Lacy back working out

Mon, 18 Jul 2016 16:35:08 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy has reunited with trainer Tony Horton, the P90X founder, this summer. Lacy spent two months with Horton earlier this year after Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said Lacy "cannot play at the weight he was at (last) year." Lacy was 15 to 18 pounds lighter in April. "Eddie will be fine," McCarthy said in May. "I believe he'll hit the target that we're all looking for when the lights come on."

Fantasy Tip: Lacy clearly means business and isn't going to let himself slip back into bad habits from last year. He should be in good shape for training camp at the end of the month and should yet again be Green Bay's main back. He's a risk-reward back in the middle rounds as a low-end RB1 or high-end RB2.

Packers | Jared Abbrederis praised by coach

Wed, 13 Jul 2016 21:16:19 -0700

Green Bay Packers WR Jared Abbrederis managed to grab just nine receptions in the regular season, but he stepped up in the postseason due to injuries. He had six catches in the playoffs. "I think Jared's had his best offseason," head coach Mike McCarthy said last month. "I think his route running is exemplary for a young guy. His ability to recognize coverages, and his time clock, his breaking points, his ability to drop his weight. Just all the specifics and details and techniques of route running, I think he's exceptional."

Fantasy Tip: Abbrederis will be fighting with Jeff Janis, Davante Adams and Ty Montgomery, among others, for targets behind Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb. It might take an injury or two to open things up for the middle and bottom of the depth chart before Abbrederis has fantasy appeal outside of the deepest of leagues.

Packers | Jeff Janis could be speed burner

Wed, 13 Jul 2016 21:15:26 -0700

Green Bay Packers WR Jeff Janis has nearly identical measurables to WR Jordy Nelson, and he posted a 40-yard dash in 4.42 seconds at the 2014 NFL Scouting Combine with a vertical leap of 37 1/2 inches. If he proves this summer that his route running and knowledge of the offense are up to speed, he might add an element that the Green Bay offense desperately needs. "He's obviously gifted very well with his athleticism, his jumping ability and his speed. He just needs to get to a level where he's not thinking as much and his instincts take over," QB Aaron Rodgers said.

Fantasy Tip: Janis had a big postseason performance, and he could be ready to take another step forward. However, the depth chart is very competitive behind Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb. Whomever emerges as the No. 3 receiver will be worth a look in the late rounds of fantasy leagues.

Packers | Davante Adams on the bubble?

Wed, 13 Jul 2016 20:24:26 -0700

Green Bay Packers WR Davante Adams had a difficult season in 2015, and while he posted 50 receptions he averaged just 9.7 yards per catch. The last time a receiver with at least 25 receptions finished with that few yards per catch was in 1951. He dropped 12 of his 96 targets, while averaging just 3.0 yards per catch. With a deep receiving corps, beat writer Rob Reischel predicts Adams will need a big training camp and preseason for a roster spot.

Fantasy Tip: Adams was a huge disappointment last season for fantasy owners expecting big production with Jordy Nelson out of the picture. Adams had too many drops, disappeared in too many games and just showed very little consistency from week to week. With Ty Montgomery, Jeff Janis, Jared Abbrederis and Trevor Davis all looking for a piece of the pie, Adams needs a big camp.
