Contradicting previous reports, Pete Dougherty, of the Green Bay Press-Gazette, reports retired QB Brett Favre did not contact the Minnesota Vikings with a Green Bay Packers-issued cell phone. A source close to Favre and one in the National Football League said Favre does not have a cell phone issued by the Packers. The two sources also said if he had a phone issued by the team it would violate NFL salary-cap rules unless the team included the cost on their salary cap. It was previously reported that Favre spoke with Vikings head coach Brad Childress and offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, Favre's quarterbacks coach from 2003-05.

According to a source, the NFL is looking into the matter and has spoken with both the Packers and Vikings. The Vikings were notified that Favre had inappropriate communication with Vikings coordinator Darrell Bevell, who is a close friend and former assistant coach with the Packers. The Vikings have denied any contact with Favre but could lose draft picks and face fines.

Continuing an ongoing report, The Associated Press reports during an interview with FOX News on "On the Record with Greta Van Susteren," former Green Bay Packers QB Brett Favre said he wants to play in the NFL again but does not feel welcome with the organization so he asked for his release from the team. "I am guilty of retiring early and there is a reason for that," Favre said, according to an excerpt provided to The Associated Press. "And the major issue is 'Why did he retire?,' and 'He asked for a release because he doesn't want to play in Green Bay.' That's not true. And I hope people are hearing this and saying 'OK, that clears it up.'" Favre was never fully committed to retiring and felt pressured by the team to make a decision. However, head coach Mike McCarthy said that general manager Ted Thompson wanted Favre to return. Favre said he understands that the Packers want to move on and thinks the team should release him. He said the Packers asked him for a list of team's he would accept a trade to, although, Favre wants to be released to guarantee he lands with a competitive team.
