Lions | Jace Billingsley could carve out role in '17

Mon, 20 Feb 2017 21:27:23 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Jace Billingsley could compete for a job at slot receiver next year, with the team unlikely to spend big at wide receiver this offseason.

Fantasy Tip: Billingsley went undrafted out of Eastern Oregon last year and spent much of this past season on Detroit's practice squad, but he does have some potential to contribute in 2017, if given the opportunity. However, even if he does crack a roster spot, he'd still be miles away from fantasy relevance, even in a live Lions offense.

Sat, 18 Feb 2017 17:46:25 -0800

Detroit Lions RB Ameer Abdullah (foot) remains on track to return for spring practice, and he posted a video of himself running on an incline treadmill.

Fantasy Tip: Detroit may try to upgrade the running game in the offseason, but if Abdullah breaks camp as the top back, he has RB2 potential.

Lions | Dan Orlovsky might not return

Sun, 12 Feb 2017 08:54:58 -0800

The Detroit Lions may decide to move on from backup QB Dan Orlovsky, who is scheduled to become a free agent next month. Matthew Stafford and Jake Rudock are the only other quarterbacks on the team's roster, so another NFL veteran or college prospect is likely to be brought in if Orlovsky does not return.

Lions | Barry Sanders believes in Ameer Abdullah

Sat, 11 Feb 2017 17:48:11 -0800

Detroit Lions RB Ameer Abdullah has the "potential" to develop into an every-down back, according to retired RB Barry Sanders.

Fantasy Tip: Injuries have derailed Abdullah's career thus far, but he has shown some promise in his limited playing time. If Detroit doesn't spend a high pick on a back, Abdullah could reach RB2 status in 2017.

Lions | Zach Zenner established himself in 2016

Mon, 06 Feb 2017 09:48:14 -0800

Lions RB Zach Zenner finished with 334 yards on 88 carries for the year and a team-high four rushing touchdowns, leading the team in rushing the last three weeks of the season. Even though Ameer Abdullah and Theo Riddick are expected to be completely healthy by the start of 2017, WR Anquan Boldin said in a recent interview Zenner could handle a growing role. "I think he's a guy that definitely will take the next step next year. … Whenever you have a young guy like that who is able to play every down, that's big. He's a guy that can run the ball effectively, catch the ball out of the backfield, he can pick up blitzes," Boldin said.

Fantasy Tip: Abdullah should remain the odds-on favorite to open camp as the starter. However, Zenner flashed enough ability as a runner and receiver down the stretch to be used to be used in tandem with him if Detroit chooses to do so. Riddick should return to his usual role of "space back". Abdullah and Riddick should be considered low-end RB2 options next season, while Zenner can be considered a valuable handcuff.
