Detroit Lions head coach Rod Marinelli stated RB Tatum Bell has a great opportunity with the Lions this year. "He's in tremendous shape. He's lean and he's fast. He's really got great speed. We just have to be smart with him and work. We're counting on him," Marinelli said. He added that he really respected how Bell handled the 2007 season and noted Bell is now in the running system he was in with the Denver Broncos. Bell, as reported, is competing for the No. 1 tailback duties.

Detroit Lions head coach Rod Marinelli stated someone at tailback is going to step up during training camp but isn't ruling out a committee approach. "It's not going to be one guy, it's going to be two, maybe three guys, that will help us carry this load," he said of the running game. He believes how they work in practice will mean something, but also noted preseason games will factor into it, too.

Nicholas J. Cotsonika, of the Detroit Free Press, reports the Detroit Lions agreed to a four-year, $27 million contract extension with CB Leigh Bodden, according to the NFL Network. Bodden will receive a $2 million signing bonus and an option bonus of $8.6 million at the beginning of March. The Lions could cut Bodden and would not have to pay him. However, he would be under contract through the 2013 season should they pay him the bonus. Lions spokesman Bill Keenist said the team had nothing to confirm.

The Associated Press reports Detroit Lions LB Caleb Campbell will not be able to participate with the Lions this season because of a change in military policy. U.S. Army Lieutenant Jonathan P. Liba wrote to Lions president Matt Millen saying that Campbell has been ordered to give up professional football for full-time traditional military duties. Campbell may ask to be released from his active duty obligations in May 2010.
