Denver Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak needs to implement an aggressive 3-4 defense, according to The Denver Post writer Mark Kiszla Wednesday Jan. 28. The Broncos defense is built for a 3-4 alignment with LB Von Miller as the focal point. Impending free-agent DT Terrance Knighton should be retained and used at nose tackle, with Miller and DE DeMarcus Ware being used as outside linebackers.

Former Houston Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips isn't the Denver Broncos' top choice as their next defensive coordinator. Cincinnati Bengals defensive backs coach Vance Joseph is, but he's trying to get out of his contract with the Bengals, and the team won't know until Wednesday, Jan. 28. One option is to have Phillips serve as the defensive coordinator for a year and then move to a senior title with Joseph taking over in 2016.

Former Houston Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips has been contacted by the Denver Broncos regarding their defensive coordinator position, according to multiple sources. The Broncos have been unable to secure Cincinnati Bengals defensive backs coach Vance Joseph as their next defensive coordinator, as the Bengals will not let him out of his contract to pursue other jobs. Phillips served on head coach Gary Kubiak's staff with the Texans from 2011 to 2013. The Broncos are expected to close the deal with Phillips, but it'd require defensive juggling to fit Phillips' 3-4 scheme; the Broncos currently have personnel fitted for a 4-3 defense. Phillips was a head coach for Denver back in the early 90s after serving as a defensive coordinator.
