"I thought Dez made great strides this year on the football field," said Irvin. "He has a lot of room to continue to grow, but he made great strides. When Dez really locks it all in, understands it, Dez will be the best receiver in the NFL."

Dallas Cowboys LB DeMarcus Ware said he will be watching Super Bowl XLVI as a form of motivation. Ware believes the team was close to being a Super Bowl contender this season. "Yeah, I'll watch on Sunday," Ware said. "It will sort of motivate me to play a little bit harder next season, knowing how close we were." The Cowboys were 0-3 against the New England Patriots and New York Giants this season.

Cowboys | Unlikely to take a QB in NFL Draft

The Dallas Cowboys have selected just two quarterback prospects out of 90 selections they've had in the NFL Draft since former QB Troy Aikman took his final snap in the 2000 season. Owner and general manager Jerry Jones said he does not envision taking a quarterback in the upcoming NFL Draft. "What you should probably be looking at more is would you bring in a veteran in free agency or some type of trade or something like that," Jones said.

Dallas Cowboys LB DeMarcus Ware said he expects the defense to play better next season because they will have a full offseason under defensive coordinator Rob Ryan to continue learning the defense. Ware said the injuries were a reason the defense did not play up to expectations this season.

Updating a previous item, Dallas Cowboys impending free-agent P Mat McBriar (knee) will have surgery next week to dissolve a cyst below his knee and the punter anticipates being 100 percent this summer. "For me that's great news," McBriar said. "Yeah, it's terrible timing but this is probably just a little bit more than just being able to play but having a functional foot for the rest of my life." McBriar was diagnosed with drop foot during the season believed to be caused by nerve damage, but after a three-day visit to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., last week he was diagnosed with an intraneural ganglion cyst below his knee.

Dallas Cowboys LB DeMarcus Ware said he expects the defense to be improved next season after a year under defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. "I think there's going to be a big improvement having Rob Ryan for a whole another year, knowing his system, knowing what's really going on. Having Jason Garrett, the leader, that motivational guy for us. I think it's going to all just pan out next season," Ware said. Communication problems on defense were mentioned by players and coaches after many of the team's losses this season. According to Ware, injuries were one of the reasons those issues occurred.

Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said it is a bit presumptuous to think LB Bruce Carter will start in 2012. "I think that's a jump or presumptuous," Jerry Jones said. "It was amazing what Bruce Carter was able to do relative to the time you assess when you have that kind of injury. He was outstanding in his rehab. He was really used with the speed and skill on special teams, he made some good plays for us, did some things out there a lot of normal players can't do. If he can carry that over, which he should be able to do, to defense he should make a good defender for us."

"We were like 10th in protecting him relative to the sack stat. We need to be better than that because he helped us protect him a little bit with his ability to move around. We need to do better there," Jones said.

Dallas Cowboys CB Mike Jenkins (shoulder) had surgery last week on his right shoulder, and it's possible he will be in the midst of rehab as the Cowboys hold their organized team activities and minicamp. Jenkins is looking at a recovery time of four to six months, according to a source. If he needs the full rehab time, then he could miss all of the offseason work and be ready for training camp.

Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett said moving OT Tyron Smith to left tackle is definitely a possibility. However, a decision has yet to be made. "It's certainly a possibility," Garrett said. "He was so athletic, I think he could have played anywhere across the line," offensive line coach Bill Callahan added. "...I think all the tackles that you coach, the guards, have to be versatile enough to flip sides at some point. So maybe this year's that point in time."
