Cleveland Browns news, rumors and injuries

Fantasy Tip: West is most likely to wind up as Cleveland's third running back out of Isaiah Crowell, Duke Johnson and West. He should be viewed more as a RB4 with Crowell and Johnson stunting his value.

Fantasy Tip: The key here is that the injury isn't serious. Johnson should still be an important part of the Browns' backfield. Cleveland might want to take it easier with him for the time being, but Johnson arguably has the most potential of any running back in Cleveland. Isaiah Crowell is still expected to start right away, but Johnson could end up giving him a run for his money.

Cleveland Browns WR Vince Mayle (thumb) has taken part in two full practice sessions after being sidelined in the spring because of surgery to repair his thumb. "The first day wasn't what I would have liked it to be," Mayle said Friday, July 31. "But I am willing to improve off of that. The second day was better. I was more confident in myself and playing like I was in college."

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown hit receivers in stride and dropped in two deep crossing routes over the coverage during training camp Friday, July 31, and WR Dwayne Bowe said McCown is showing "all the potential of being a top five quarterback in the NFL."
Fantasy Tip: To say that Bowe is exaggerating a bit is a major understatement. McCown is simply holding down the starting job until Cleveland can find a franchise quarterback, and he is a low-end QB2 at best in 2015.

Fantasy Tip: Crowell worked with the starters after Terrance West received snaps with the first-team offense during the first day of training camp. The Browns probably will use a committee at running back, which hurts the fantasy value of all of the backs. Crowell should still see solid playing time and could be a middle- to late-round option in drafts.

Cleveland Browns RB Isaiah Crowell and QB Josh McCown had trouble exchanging the football more than once early in practice Thursday, July 30. Crowell also struggled securing the football in his rookie season.
Fantasy Tip: As head coach Mike Pettine said, this is why teams have training camps and practices. Everything isn't going to mesh right away. It is disconcerting that Crowell's ball security issues are coming up again, though. If he can fix, or at least lessen, that problem, he's worth a look as a high-end RB3.

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel had good and bad moments during practice Thursday, July 30. Manziel worked with the second-team offense during practice and had some problems during drills. During one series of drills, he would have been sacked on the first two snaps, almost threw an interception and had a pass batted down at the line of scrimmage. He did make two nice throws during another part of team drills.
Fantasy Tip: Manziel is believed to have a chance for the starting job, but Josh McCown likely would have to really struggle during the preseason for Manziel to win the job. Owners probably should avoid both quarterbacks this season.

Cleveland Browns WR Terrelle Pryor was impressive during practice Thursday, July 30, according to head coach Mike Pettine. "He looks great in a uniform. Big, explosive athlete. Good start for Terrelle," Pettine said.

Cleveland Browns RB Terrance West worked with the first-team offense during team drills Thursday, July 30. Head coach Mike Pettine said several running backs will see time with the starters during training camp.
Fantasy Tip: The Browns do not appear to have a clear No. 1 running back at this point and that several players will receive work with the starters. West rushed for 673 yards and four touchdowns last season and should see a good amount of carries this season. West probably is not more than a late-round pick at this point since his role is still uncertain.
