Cleveland Browns news, rumors and injuries

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel had teammates come to his defense after an unidentified player called Manziel a "100 percent joke" last week. "It's not true at all that Johnny's teammates think he's a 100 percent joke," CB Joe Haden said. "There's a lot of players on the team that do [love Manziel]."
Fantasy Tip: Looking ahead, Manziel has a lot of work ahead of him going into the offseason and training camp. At best, he should be considered a risky backup quarterback option in 2015.

Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon is in Stage 3 of an alcohol program, which requires him to be tested for alcohol for a minimum of two years. His failed drug test came after the end of the 2014 season, and it's unlikely that an appeal will work to eliminate or lessen a one-year ban for the 2015 season.
Fantasy Tip: Unless anything changes as we get closer to the start of the 2015 season, prepare to avoid Gordon at all costs in your traditional fantasy football drafts this year.

Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon tested positive for alcohol, according to sources, and his failed test will subject him to a possible one-year suspension. Gordon caught 24 passes for 303 yards in five games last year after leading the NFL with 1,646 yards in 14 games in 2013.
Fantasy Tip: Gordon is one of the special talents in the league, but his off-field demeanor is clearly getting in his way. More clarification on whether he'll be suspended for the whole year will go a long way in determining if fantasy football drafters need to completely avoid him for the 2015 season.

Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon will be under contract through the 2016 season, and he will only be a restricted free agent after that year due to his looming suspension for another failed substance test.
Fantasy Tip: For the second consecutive season, Gordon heads into the year with a giant cloud of uncertainty. Fantasy owners will want to stay away on draft day, although by then there is certain to be more clarity on his playing situation.

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel had a big proponent last year in owner Jimmy Haslam, but Haslam now thinks the team needs a quarterback in order to get their team turned in the right direction. "We've got to get a quarterback and got to get it fixed," Haslam said. "What I would say to our fans is, we're going to continue to work really hard to find that quarterback who can make us a championship team." Haslam isn't ruling out Manziel being the starting quarterback in 2015, but he's leaving it open for other options, including QBs Brian Hoyer or Connor Shaw.
Fantasy Tip: Even though Manziel didn't have much time to prove himself at the tail end of last season, it apparently was enough to convince the team that they'll have an open competition at the position in training camp this year. Manziel will likely head into fantasy football draft season as a giant risk as a backup QB.

Former Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan was let go by head coach Mike Pettine because Pettine did not want someone on his staff that did not want to be there. "It was something that we didn't want to drag out,'' said Pettine. "It's just very hard to win in the NFL (even) when everybody's into it and they truly want to be there, and again if you have somebody that just doesn't want to be there, I know it's easy to say, 'Hey he's under contract, hold him to it,' (but now) there's a dark cloud over your coaching offices and I've been a part of that."

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer could be re-signed this offseason, according to his agent. Hoyer is expected to meet with general manager Ray Farmer and offensive coordinator John DeFilippo in the near future.
Fantasy Tip: It still remains to be seen who will start for the Browns in 2015. Johnny Manziel does have more upside than Hoyer, but neither one is a reliable starting fantasy quarterback at this point.

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel will be working with a new offensive coordinator this year in John DeFilippo, but DeFilippo is unsure if the team's quarterback next year is currently on the roster. "We're not sure if our starting quarterback's in the building right now or not," DeFilippo said. "If he is, that's great. If he's not, that's great, too. Whoever's in that room is going to be coached hard, be held accountable and be expected to do the things that we expect out of Cleveland Browns quarterbacks." DeFilippo said that all Cleveland quarterbacks will begin the offseason with a clean slate.
Fantasy Tip: DeFilippo has been praised as a very bright young mind to mold quarterbacks, but he has limited experience and is moving to a new team. Combine that with the very raw skills we saw in Manziel's limited action last year, and you have to be very uneasy about Manziel's fantasy prospects in just his second year, assuming he even wins the starting QB job in training camp.

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel could benefit from new offensive coordinator John DeFilippo, according to Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr. Carr said DeFilippo will do great with Manziel, adding that DeFilippo has worked with a running quarterback before in Kansas City Chiefs QB Terrelle Pryor.
Fantasy Tip: It remains to be seen if Manziel will even start for the Browns in 2015, but the DeFilippo hiring bodes well. At this point, however, it's best to tread lightly with Manziel.

Former Oakland Raiders quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo will be hired as the Cleveland Browns' offensive coordinator. The deal has not officially been completed, but it's expected to be done by the end of the week, according to a source. DeFilippo hasn't called plays at the NFL level yet but did so at San Jose State.
Fantasy Tip: DeFilippo's biggest task will be working with and molding Johnny Manziel, who struggled mightily in his limited starting action in his rookie season. With a lack of offensive weapons for Cleveland, fantasy football drafters shouldn't expect much from Manziel in his second season.
