Williams appears to be the favorite for the starting strong safety job but is ready to compete with the other players during training camp. "I'm going to compete and whatever I do I will try to do at a high velocity. I see all the other guys are like that as well. The competition is great and we will have a great team because everyone is competing for the same jobs and that's a good thing," Williams said.

Georgetown College athletic director Eric Ward said, "Both sides are interested in another year, but nothing is signed yet. We know how important that is to get that done before camp starts so everyone isn't asking about next year."

"It's just like when a track guy needs to get faster. You don't do 5,000 squats, you run and run some more. To get your arm in shape you throw and continue to throw. So I will be throwing all summer long as well as in training camp," Palmer said.

The unit is hoping to emerge as a top 10 defense in the league. "Our depth is a lot better than it was; a lot of the guys getting to play last year have helped," Zimmer said. "The biggest thing you notice is we don't have a whole bunch of glaring weaknesses. Linebackers, ends, safeties are probably our three deepest positions. I don't know if anything has surprised me (in the last month), but I know we're playing better in the red zone and we have better communication."

Maualuga is also seeing time at middle linebacker, where he will be when the defense is in passing situations and on the goal line.
