The Chicago Bears have not signed franchise free-agent RB Matt Forte to a long-term contract at this point in part because they are worried about whether his knees will hold up moving forward. The team is worried that Forte could develop arthritis in the knees.

Chicago Bears LB J.T. Thomas is expected to have the misdemeanor drug possession charge dropped before the start of training camp as long as he completes the terms of a deferred sentence. The NFL is still reviewing his case but he is not expected to receive any punishment.

If the Bears budget at least $20 million in guarantees to one offensive back, investing in Cutler is smarter money than Forte. Cutler has two years remaining on a five-year, $50 million extension he signed in 2009.

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler appeared to be taking a shot at former offensive coordinator Mike Martz by saying there is more communication with new offensive coordinator Mike Tice and quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates. "There were plays out here today that I told (QB coach Jeremy Bates) I don't like them, let's think about getting rid of them and he's fine with that, and coach (OC Mike) Tice is fine with that," Cutler said. "It's a give and take and that's a breath of fresh air around here, being able to give ideas and everyone giving ideas and let's pick the best ones that work for everybody."

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler said he is going to take a wait-and-see approach before being comfortable with the offensive line in the new offense this season. "You know, the offensive line is definitely going to be a concern and seeing where those guys are going to fit in and seeing what five we go with. If [OT Gabe Carimi] comes back, if [OT J'Marcus Webb] pans out. Where are we going to put [OG Chris Williams]? There are some question marks there. Until we really get that resolved, and get our front five settled in, we've got some work to do on offense," Cutler said. Cutler thinks the new offense will help some but they will still need to protect him on passing plays.
