Panthers | Tyler Gaffney making good first impression

Tue, 08 Jul 2014 18:26:20 -0700

Carolina Panthers RB Tyler Gaffney has earned praise from the coaching staff for his ability in blitz pickup and familiarity with the team's power running scheme, according to Max Henson of

Fantasy Tip: While the rookie has been impressing the coaching staff, it seems unlikely Gaffney will make any kind of impact in fantasy circles without a couple of injuries. DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart will receive a bulk of the carries if healthy, and Mike Tolbert is the short-yardage back.

Thu, 03 Jul 2014 10:26:08 -0700

Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen praised QB Cam Newton. "I don't know if there is another QB in the league that does what he does...he has really grown," Newton said.

Fantasy Tip: The big question with Newton will be his health after undergoing an ankle procedure in the offseason. If he is healthy going into training camp, he should be considered a QB2 going into the season.

Carolina Panthers LB Thomas Davis said he would retire before playing for another organization. "If I'm going to play football and represent an organization, it's going to be with the team that stuck beside me and never gave up on me," Davis said. "My mindset right now is, I'm going to play for the Carolina Panthers or I'm done playing football." Panthers | Jason Avant clashed with Chip Kelly

Wed, 25 Jun 2014 09:27:04 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Jason Avant said he did not approve of his standing with head coach Chip Kelly last season with the Philadelphia Eagles. Avant said he "mostly ran clear-out routes. ... When it came to certain things, we butted heads sometimes -- route running and route technique. So I knew I didn't fit his system."

Fantasy Tip: Avant wasn't the field-stretching type of slot receiver Kelly likes to use. In Carolina, the vet won't be much more than a bye-week replacement type but will have several big games. Good luck figuring out when to play him.

Mon, 23 Jun 2014 19:01:41 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Jason Avant has earned praise form head coach Ron Rivera for the leadership he has shown to WR Kelvin Benjamin and the team's other receivers. "Jason does things exactly the way you want them he's a pro," Rivera said. "In all honesty, the thought was that if you could have a couple of veteran guys who have been there and done that around a Kelvin Benjamin, that could be very good for him. And Jason has not just been good for Benjamin, he's been good for a whole lot of guys."

Panthers | A.J. Klein impressing coach

Fri, 20 Jun 2014 19:13:09 -0700

Carolina Panthers LB A.J. Klein has impressed linebackers coach Al Holcomb with his play this spring. "He is definitely more confident," Holcomb said. "When he is out there taking reps at middle linebacker, he is taking command. It's all about competition. I consider A.J. a starter. He's done a good job and he's going to continue to earn the right to get playing time for us this season." Klein has been serving as LB Luke Kuechly's backup and is competing with LB Chase Blackburn for the starting weakside linebacker spot.

Panthers | Excited about Kelvin Benjamin

Fri, 20 Jun 2014 13:39:33 -0700

The Carolina Panthers are excited about what they have seen out of WR Kelvin Benjamin during organized team activities this summer. "That's part of why you bring the young man in," head coach Ron Rivera said. "You draft him for a specific skill set. He can become a threat in the red zone and a threat for you on third down and have an immediate impact doing those things for us. It was good to see him do those things and good to see him work with Cam (Newton) as well. I'm excited as to where he's heading and what he can become for us."

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin is extremely raw, but the Panthers don't have many other imposing wideout options, so he should see starter repetitions immediately. His biggest asset is his size, and he should give Cam Newton a nice red zone option. There'll be a learning curve here, though, so use Benjamin as WR depth with upside.
