Carolina Panthers news, rumors and injuriesWed, 19 Jun 2013 10:19:57 -0700 The Carolina Panthers did not run many zone-read OTAs. The option package will be de-emphasized under new offensive coordinator Mike Shula. Fantasy Tip: Great idea, since Cam Newton struggled in those plays early last season. The switch that was flipped in Newton's stats column was prompted by Carolina easing up on the zone-read. Expect the typical erratic statistical distribution among the backfield, but Newton should have another fine year with his increased time as a pocket passer. He'll cost plenty in drafts. Share: Panthers | Ben Hartsock to see more targets? Tue, 18 Jun 2013 19:25:49 -0700 Carolina Panthers TE Ben Hartsock spent most of his first nine seasons in the NFL clearing space for running backs and protecting quarterbacks, rarely getting any balls thrown his way. However, during minicamp, QB Cam Newton targeted Hartsock on a number of underneath routes and Hartsock did not have any noticeable drops. Fantasy Tip: Even if Hartsock sees an uptick in his offensive production, he has a long way to go before fantasy owners depend on him on a weekly basis. Share: Panthers | Robert Lester in mix for job Tue, 18 Jun 2013 19:24:28 -0700 Carolina Panthers undrafted rookie SS Robert Lester reportedly looked good during organized team activities (OTAs) and minicamp, and he is in the mix for the starting strong safety spot opposite FS Chrles Godfrey. Share: Panthers | Star Lotulelei in good shape Tue, 18 Jun 2013 19:23:29 -0700 Carolina Panthers DT Star Lotulelei showed up to offseason workouts in good shape. The team also drafted pass-rusher DT Kawann Short, so it was thought Lotulelei might come out in certain passing situations. However, Lotulelei was on the field a lot during minicamp, and head coach Ron Rivera said Lotulelei has "come a long way" as far as using his hands to shed blockers. Share: Panthers | Both CB spots wide open Tue, 18 Jun 2013 19:22:28 -0700 Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera says both cornerback spots are wide open, but CBs Josh Norman and Josh Thomas spent a lot of time working with the first-team defense during organized team activities (OTAs) and minicamp. Secondary coach Steve Wilks said Norman came back for his second NFL season more disciplined and focused after being benched toward the end of last season due to inconsistent play and freelancing in coverage. Share: Panthers | Two getting reps Tue, 18 Jun 2013 06:12:56 -0700 Carolina Panthers RBs DeAngelo Williams and Mike Tolbert received plenty of repetitions in OTAs with RB Jonathan Stewart (ankles) on the mend. Share: Panthers | Greg Olsen showing rapport with Cam Newton Tue, 18 Jun 2013 06:08:18 -0700 Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen is showing great timing with QB Cam Newton during offseason workouts. Fantasy Tip: Olsen could re-establish himself as a solid No. 1 tight end option this season. He's expected to play most snaps and could develop into Newton's top target. Look at him as a sneaky low-end No. 1 option. Share: Panthers | Wide receiver notes Thu, 13 Jun 2013 10:25:01 -0700 Carolina Panthers WRs Steve Smith and Brandon LaFell are locked in at the top two spots. Ted Ginn Jr. has stood out during minicamp, catching several deep passes from Cam Newton. Armanti Edwards looks more comfortable playing the position. Ginn and Edwards will compete with Kealoha Pilares, Joe Adams and David Gettis for roster spots and reps. Fantasy Tip: It's hard to trust Ginn finally developing into a full-fledged catcher, but there's big-play potential here in what could be a surprisingly productive passing system. Greg Olsen's presence limits the availability of secondary targets, but waiver-wire scroungers in deep leagues will watch this play out during the season. Share: Panthers | Kenjon Barner looks explosive Thu, 13 Jun 2013 10:23:10 -0700 Carolina Panthers RB Kenjon Barner has looked explosive and fast in practice. They might figure out how to get the rookie into the backfield mix. Fantasy Tip: This would especially be true if Jonathan Stewart's ankles keep him out for much of their summer workouts. Barner is nothing more than a last-round flyer in deeper redraft leagues, but he's someone to watch over the long term. Share: Panthers | Jonathan Stewart might not be ready Thu, 13 Jun 2013 10:20:36 -0700 Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (ankles) may not be ready for the start of training camp. Fantasy Tip: Pat Yasinskas got this sense from what coach Ron Rivera said. If Stewart misses any time, DeAngelo Williams would seize the majority of backfield work but would remain capped in statistical upside thanks to the presence of Mike Tolbert, Kenjon Barner and Cam Newton. Share: Panthers | Jon Beason practicing Thu, 13 Jun 2013 08:35:40 -0700 Carolina Panthers LB Jon Beason (knee, shoulder) returned to practice Wednesday, June 12, with the first-team defense. He has moved to strongside linebacker. "They passed him on the physical, so I assume he's 100 percent. He moved around like it. He made some plays," head coach Ron Rivera said. "You really see that energy coming back. You see that quickness." Share: Panthers | Domenik Hixon sitting out minicamp Wed, 12 Jun 2013 09:38:25 -0700 Carolina Panthers WR Domenik Hixon (hamstring) will miss all of the team's three-day minicamp this week because he injured his hamstring last week in organized team activities, according to head coach Ron Rivera. "He is coming on, did some really nice things for us, but unfortunately we're going to miss out on the next couple days without him." Share: Panthers | Jonathan Stewart still in recovery mode Wed, 12 Jun 2013 09:37:17 -0700 Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (ankles) continues to recover from offseason surgeries on both of his ankles and is sitting out the team's three-day minicamp this week as a result. Head coach Ron Rivera said that Stewart is recovering well but didn't say whether he'd be ready for training camp. "The hard part is any time you have both of them done -- whether it's two ankles, two knees, two hips, two shoulders, whatever -- it's going to be a while." Fantasy Tip: Even if he's not ready for the start of camp, it seems likely that J-Stew will have plenty of time to get ready for the season opener. Fantasy owners shouldn't be too worried. Share: Panthers | Greg Hardy won't hold out Tue, 11 Jun 2013 09:19:06 -0700 Carolina Panthers DE Greg Hardy showed up for minicamp on Tuesday, June 11, and said that he plans to report to training camp with his current contract. Share: Panthers | Jon Beason ahead of schedule Sun, 09 Jun 2013 08:43:31 -0700 Carolina Panthers LB Jon Beason (knee, shoulder) said he is ahead of schedule in his rehab from offseason knee and shoulder surgeries. He said his goal was to be ready for training camp but that he will be able to do some things during the team's upcoming minicamp. Share: ![]() |
