Panthers | Peppers says he does not want long-term deal

The Associated Press reports Carolina Panthers DL Julius Peppers indicated Tuesday, Feb. 9, during a Charlotte radio interview that he is irritated by the team's silence in regards to contract talks. "I'm a man of very few words; I understand very well what silence means," Peppers said. "I do it a lot and I understand that. You being silent to me, I understand exactly what you're trying to say. Because of the lack of communication that they've had with us, if somebody asks me 'Do I want to stay in Carolina and play for the Panthers next year?,' it's like OK, well, how can you say you want to be somewhere if you're not really sure if they want you. Because they're not even talking to you." Peppers said the team has not had any serious discussions with his agent.

Last offseason, Peppers said he wanted to play as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme. "He has indicated to me that he is open to hearing from the remaining 31 teams in the league," Carey said. "He is open to any defensive scheme at this point."

To date, we still have not heard from them. They are definitely giving Julius the silent treatment, but sometimes silence actually tells you more than words do. We can only conclude that they have moved on."

Updating a previous item, David Scott, of the Charlotte Observer, reports Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (finger, Achilles') underwent successful surgery on his left Achilles' tendon Wednesday, Jan. 20. Stewart's agent, Ben Dogra, would not say what the severity of the injury had been, but he said the surgery was to alleviate "lingering pain." Stewart is expected to be ready for the team's minicamp in May. Dogra said Stewart also had minor surgery on a pinky finger.
