Panthers | Carolina efficient in red zone

Fri, 05 Feb 2016 13:05:23 -0800

The Carolina Panthers and QB Cam Newton scored a touchdown on 68% of their red zone drives during the regular season. Only the Detroit Lions (69%) were better in the red zone.

Fantasy Tip: They'll need to keep that trend going in the Super Bowl against the No. 1 defense in the Denver Broncos if they want to win the game. Surprisingly, Denver wasn't that good defending down in the red zone this year, and Newton presents plenty of problems with his legs and his arm near the touchdown stripe.

Panthers | Cam Newton good in play action

Fri, 05 Feb 2016 11:12:51 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton had nine touchdowns on play-action passes this year, which was second to only New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (10). The Denver Broncos allowed just 87 play-action pass attempts this year (second-fewest), 54% completion percentage on those plays (ranked second) and just two touchdowns (tied for second-fewest).

Fantasy Tip: It'll all come back to how well the Panthers can run against a strong run-stopping unit in Denver. If Carolina runs the ball effectively, Newton should have more success on play-action plays in Super Bowl 50.

Panthers | Thomas Davis expected to start

Fri, 05 Feb 2016 09:50:55 -0800

Carolina Panthers LB Thomas Davis (forearm) is expected to start in Super Bowl 50 against the Denver Broncos, according to head coach Ron Rivera. "Yes, yes I do (expect Davis to start) based on everything I'm seeing from him right now and what the doctors have talked about -- they talk about him every day and we go over everything he's done and what they're seeing. That's been a huge plus." Rivera said. "He actually took a shot in the arm yesterday and said 'I'm fine. That felt pretty good.'"

Panthers | Mike Tolbert has full practice

Thu, 04 Feb 2016 16:33:45 -0800

Carolina Panthers FB Mike Tolbert (knee) was a full participant in practice Thursday, Feb. 4.

Fantasy Tip: Tolbert will be good to go for Super Bowl 50, but he doesn't have much value outside of short-yardage situations. Plus, the Denver Broncos are stingy versus the run.

Panthers | Greg Olsen excels on deep passes

Thu, 04 Feb 2016 10:25:55 -0800

Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen has 22 receptions on passes thrown between 15 and 30 yards downfield in 2015 (including playoffs), the most since New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski and former New Orleans Saints TE Jimmy Graham each had 21 in 2011.

Fantasy Tip: Gronkowski was 3-for-3 on such throws in the AFC Championship Game against the Denver Broncos, so Olsen could be primed for a huge day in Super Bowl 50, especially since the Broncos' safeties (T.J. Ward and Darian Stewart) are both battling lower-body injuries. Olsen could easily be the most productive skill-position player on either side on Super Sunday.

Panthers | Thomas Davis, Jared Allen on track

Thu, 04 Feb 2016 09:08:24 -0800

Carolina Panthers LB Thomas Davis (forearm) and DE Jared Allen (foot) remain on track to play in Super Bowl 50 against the Denver Broncos after both practiced Wednesday, Feb. 3. Allen was limited, but the move was precautionary, according to head coach Ron Rivera. Davis was a full participant and wore a protective cast over his arm. Rivera said Davis will have his arm looked at by doctors again Friday, Feb. 5, but his full practice load was an indication he'll play.

Panthers | Mike Tolbert wants to return

Wed, 03 Feb 2016 22:04:54 -0800

Carolina Panthers impending free-agent FB Mike Tolbert is hopeful Super Bowl 50 Sunday, Feb. 7, against the Denver Broncos is not his last with the team. "We'll take of all the business aspects of my contract after the season. I would love to stay, but you never know what happens. We'll see," Tolbert said Wednesday, Feb. 4.

Fantasy Tip: Tolbert has been a steadying veteran in the locker room and a bowling ball of a lead blocker for Jonathan Stewart, but price tag might be the issue.

Panthers | Mike Tolbert a full participant

Wed, 03 Feb 2016 16:27:51 -0800

Carolina Panthers FB Mike Tolbert (knee) practiced in full Wednesday, Feb. 3.

Fantasy Tip: Tolbert will play against the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 50 and could be important in short-yardage and goal-line situations against a very strong Denver run defense.

Panthers | Cam Newton excellent in red zone

Tue, 02 Feb 2016 14:30:02 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton has a 105.6 passer rating and has posted a 39:1 touchdown-to-interception ratio in the red zone since 2014. He's thrown 26 red zone touchdowns this year without a single interception. The Denver Broncos ranked 20th in red zone efficiency in 2015, with 22 touchdowns allowed in 37 red zone possessions.

Fantasy Tip: The Broncos, the NFL's No. 1 defense this year, will have their hands full with Newton in the big game. His ability to make plays with his feet and in the pocket separate him from most other quarterbacks the Broncos have faced this year. It's hard to envision Denver slowing Newton down for four full quarters.

Panthers | Carolina an offensive juggernaut

Tue, 02 Feb 2016 14:28:22 -0800

The Carolina Panthers have scored 30-plus points in eight of their last nine games (including the playoffs) and are averaging 36.1 points and 385.3 total yards in that span under offensive coordinator Mike Shula. The Panthers have outscored their opponents 266-121 in the first halves of games in the regular season. They outscored the Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals by a combined margin of 55-7 in the playoffs, and they have seven touchdowns and two field goals in 13 first-half possessions.

Fantasy Tip: It starts and ends with Cam Newton, the likely choice for MVP this season. His ability to make plays with his legs outside the pocket and improvement throwing within the pocket this year puts added stress on any defense. It'll be a test for the Panthers against the No. 1 overall defense this year in the Denver Broncos, but you can't argue that Carolina's balance on offense will be tough to slow down.
