Panthers | Curtis Samuel strains hamstring

Fri, 28 Jul 2017 10:15:27 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Curtis Samuel (hamstring) felt tightness in his hamstring after practice Thursday, July 27, and there is no timetable for his return.

Fantasy Tip: Samuel also missed time during the spring with a hamstring issue, so expect the Panthers to take it slow with their second-round rookie. Russell Shepard is reportedly earning Cam Newton's confidence early in camp, so too much missed time from Samuel may cause him to slide down the depth chart temporarily. For now, he is still a fantasy WR5 with significant upside.

Panthers | Christian McCaffrey active in passing game

Thu, 27 Jul 2017 17:46:07 -0700

Carolina Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey was targeted on an excessive number of short passes and screens Thursday, July 27, which could indicate there are "big plans for him." He even drew a lot of "oohs and ahs" from fans on the hill overlooking the practice field.

Fantasy Tip: McCaffrey figures to be one of the frontrunners for this year's Offensive Rookie of the Year award, as not only does he have the skill to make a big impact out of the gate, but it looks like he'll also have a very active role in the offense. The incumbent starting running back, Jonathan Stewart, has missed at least three games in each of the past five seasons, so McCaffrey should receive plenty of opportunities during his rookie campaign. He deserves consideration in all formats.

Panthers | Cam Newton wants to rebound

Thu, 27 Jul 2017 10:41:34 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton took his disappointing 2016 campaign personally and said the upcoming season isn't just another year.

Fantasy Tip: Newton has slimmed down this offseason and appears to have a newfound focus heading into the new season. It remains to be seen what actually comes of these new developments, but he's saying and doing the right things. Newton is a borderline QB1, just be prepared for him to miss a game or two.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin at a good weight

Tue, 25 Jul 2017 13:53:21 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin is where he needs to be regarding his weight, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Fantasy Tip: Benjamin is one of the bigger receivers in the league and has more of a tight end's physique. That size helps him gain big yards and touchdowns, though. In the two seasons he's played, Benjamin averaged 974.5 yards and eight touchdowns. Give him a look as a WR2.

Panthers | Greg Olsen to play out his deal

Tue, 25 Jul 2017 07:54:56 -0700

Updating previous reports, Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen said he plans to play out his contract. He said he didn't want to add to the distractions for the team after general manager Dave Gettleman was fired.

Fantasy Tip: The 32-year-old has three straight 1,000-yard seasons and averaged 80.3 catches per season. His value took a hit last year when his three touchdowns were half of what he scored in each of the previous three seasons. A healthy Cam Newton should bring that back up to the norm, and Olsen is a high-end TE1 just devoid of much upside.

Panthers | Greg Olsen will report on time

Mon, 24 Jul 2017 15:26:22 -0700

Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen will report to training camp on time Tuesday, July 25, even though he considered holding out because he wants a new contract, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Olsen has been one of the best tight ends in the NFL over the last several years and will continue to be a big part of the team's passing game. He will be a solid No. 1 fantasy tight end for owners as long as he is healthy.

Panthers | Cam Newton still on the mend

Fri, 21 Jul 2017 11:33:11 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) may not be 100 percent healthy going into camp, according to head coach Ron Rivera. "I know he's been throwing it. … He's talking to the trainers about (how much he should be throwing). I'm just pleased there is an opportunity for him to start off and start off on the right foot," Rivera said.

Fantasy Tip: Owners should be cautiously optimistic here. The fact he has been allowed to throw without supervision is a positive sign in and of itself, but it sounds as if Newton could still very much use the extra month-plus to complete the healing process. It seems highly unlikely the Panthers will expose Newton to much, if any, action in the preseason. Assuming he remains on his current track, however, he should still be considered a midrange to low-end QB1 in fantasy.
