Panthers | Christian McCaffrey draws lofty praise

Fri, 28 Apr 2017 09:04:37 -0700

Carolina Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey drew a comparison to the Hall-of-Famer Curtis Martin from general manager Dave Gettleman shortly after the team selected him Thursday, April 27. "It doesn't happen very often. The best tackle-box runner I've ever seen is Curtis Martin out of Pitt. Christian is right there with him. Running in that tackle box takes unique vision and unique quickness, and he's got it. Curtis Martin had it, and he had a great career a Hall of Fame career and this kid's got those kind of skills," Gettleman said.

Fantasy Tip: One gets the sense Carolina sees McCaffrey as a feature back down the road, as Martin ran for 14,101 yards in 11 seasons. McCaffrey is likely to start out his career in the back end of a committee with Jonathan Stewart and will probably be considered the team's slot option as well as its top kick returner. McCaffrey will not lack for work, although it might take him a year or two before he gets the high-volume offensive role fantasy owners desire. Regardless, he should make for a fine flex option as a rookie.

Panthers | Christian McCaffrey to fill many roles

Thu, 27 Apr 2017 21:37:30 -0700

Carolina Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey will be used in a similar capacity to his time at Stanford, according to head coach Ron Rivera, who also indicated McCaffrey will serve as a punt returner.

Fantasy Tip: Position flexibility and versatility are the name of the game with McCaffrey, who figures to line up all over the field and be heavily involved in the running, passing and return games. He's well positioned to flourish as a rookie and will draw a lot of interest early in drafts with his value spiking in PPR formats.

Panthers | Carolina in love with Christian McCaffrey

Thu, 27 Apr 2017 19:10:43 -0700

Carolina Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey has "elite skills," according to general manager Dave Gettleman. "So much value there," Gettleman said. "He was a guy we targeted."

Fantasy Tip: McCaffrey will have an immediate role as both a runner and a receiver in Carolina. He is no worse than a flex play as a rookie, and he'll have even more value in PPR formats. In rookie drafts, he should be in consideration for the top pick.

Panthers | Carolina selects Christian McCaffrey

Thu, 27 Apr 2017 18:07:28 -0700

The Carolina Panthers selected Stanford RB Christian McCaffrey with the No. 8 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft Thursday, April 27.

Fantasy Tip: McCaffrey should have a solid role in the offense right away with the Panthers because of his ability to catch the ball. He probably will also receive a few carries each game. McCaffrey will be a valuable pick in point-per-reception leagues because of his receiving skills.

Panthers | Carolina could trade back

Tue, 25 Apr 2017 14:26:38 -0700

LSU RB Leonard Fournette's availability may dictate whether or not the Carolina Panther trade back from their No. 8 overall selection in the NFL draft, according to NFL Network's Mike Garofolo.

Fantasy Tip: The Panthers and Jacksonville Jaguars have been two of the most linked teams to Fournette. Apparently the Panthers are comfortable with waiting if they aren't able to take the star prospect. If that's the case, Jonathan Stewart could very well remain the primary running back in Carolina. Even at 30 years old, Stewart would warrant RB2 consideration in that case.

Panthers | Cam Newton on track for camp

Fri, 21 Apr 2017 12:36:45 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) is "on schedule'' to be ready for training camp after having arthroscopic shoulder surgery on March 30, according to general manager Dave Gettleman.

Fantasy Tip: Newton had a miserable season by his standards last season, although his offensive line and the bum shoulder didn't help him much in that regard. While a bounce-back year could be in order, the primary focus of the Panthers' offseason has been to cut down on the amount of punishment Newton receives, which should mean a decline in his number of rushing attempts. If that happens, Newton becomes more of a midrange fantasy QB1 instead of the elite one he was in 2015.

Panthers | Cam Newton prioritized leadership

Thu, 20 Apr 2017 19:54:07 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton said he played injured last year because he felt it was his duty as team captain.

Fantasy Tip: Newton was a perennial top-five fantasy option at his position prior to last year's injury-plagued campaign. If he slips in drafts, he could end up being a good value pick in 2017.

Panthers | Cam Newton on track for training camp

Thu, 20 Apr 2017 16:50:21 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) doesn't expect to be allowed to throw until late-June, but remains on track to be "all-clear" by the time training camp opens a month later.

Fantasy Tip: Newton will be seeking to follow up a season in which he was one of the biggest disappointments in all of fantasy football. Fortunately, it looks like he'll at least be healthy from the onset, and considering how he's descended draft boards everywhere, he could be a good value pick later on for owners.

Panthers | Cam Newton to be restricted at OTAs

Mon, 17 Apr 2017 20:00:34 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) will be restricted from throwing throughout organized team activities, but he'll be able to participate in the two weeks of strength and conditioning and physical rehabilitation that makes up Phase 1. He should also be able to take part in Phases 2 and 3, with the exception of anything that might put stress on his right shoulder.

Fantasy Tip: Newton's coming off a season in which he registered by far the lowest quarterback rating of his career -- 75.8 -- while also rushing for a career-low 359 yards. In other words, he was one of the biggest disappointments in all of fantasy football last year. Even though he'll also be trying to come back from surgery, owners might be able to view him as a value pick later on in drafts, but he certainly no longer warrants an early selection like in years past.
