Carolina Panthers news, rumors and injuries

Carolina Panthers FB Mike Tolbert said there have been no contract talks with the Panthers yet. Tolbert already said he would like to return to Carolina next season. He may be asked to restructure his current deal, which stands at $3.4 million.
Fantasy Tip: Tolbert is one of the few real fullbacks still used in the NFL. He may see a goal-line carry for a touchdown here and there, but he's not worth rostering in fantasy lineups.

Fantasy Tip: Cotchery had a fairly quiet second season with the Panthers, putting up 485 receiving yards and three touchdowns in 14 games. He'll probably have minimal fantasy value whether he stays in Carolina or plays elsewhere.

Carolina Panthers CB Josh Norman could receive the franchise tag if he and the Panthers aren't able to agree on a long-term deal in the near future. General manager Dave Gettleman said the Panthers will do the best they can to keep their current team together.

Fantasy Tip: Tolbert only ran 62 tims for 256 yards and one touchdown in 2015. He's oft-used as a runner and typically only in tough short-yardage and goal-line situations. It would take several injuries on the running back depth chart for him to be a realistic fantasy option.

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton said he didn't dive after a second-half fumble in the Super Bowl because of the way his leg was positioned. "I don't dive on one fumble because the way my leg was - it could have been (contorted) in a way," Newton said. "OK, you say my effort. I didn't dive down. I fumbled. That's fine. But we didn't lose that game because of that fumble. I can tell you that."
Fantasy Tip: Newton has his critics, but what can't be questioned is that he vaulted himself into the elite club of fantasy quarterbacks. He'll be among the top four or five QBs taken in drafts at worst.

Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen had four catches for 41 yards Sunday, Feb. 7, in Super Bowl 50. The Denver Broncos were efficient at shadowing Olsen on midrange routes. "They did a nice job with Greg," Panthers offensive coordinator Mike Shula said. "He's so talented in the passing game, but we were in a lot of long yardage. They can kind of focus on him and do different things."
Fantasy Tip: Olsen had a big 77-1,104-7 season and should be in the discussion for the second-best tight end after Rob Gronkowski. He'll be a top-five choice at the position in next year's drafts.

Fantasy Tip: Newton was under constant pressure from the stout Denver defense, and although his season ended on a sour note, he should still be considered one of the top fantasy quarterbacks when the 2016 season rolls around.

Fantasy Tip: With Brown out of action, Cam Newton will likely lean even more heavily on Greg Olsen and Ted Ginn.

Fantasy Tip: Whatever Stewart did to his foot, it isn't serious enough to keep him off the field. With that in mind, it is unlikely the injury would have any long-term impact on Stewart.

Fantasy Tip: If Stewart can't return to the game, look for Fozzy Whittaker and Mike Tolbert to see plenty of work.

Fantasy Tip: Stay tuned for updates on Stewart. If it happens to be a serious injury, it could linger into next season.
