Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (back) returned to practice Wednesday, Dec. 17, and he worked with the second-team offense in the portion of practice open to the media. QB Derek Anderson worked with the first-team. Newton's status for Week 16 against the Cleveland Browns is uncertain right now, but he looked to be moving and throwing well Wednesday. He also ran and make some juke moves without difficulty. Head coach Ron Rivera said he had hoped to make a decision on the starting QB early in the week.
Fantasy Tip: Newton ($6,700) is a very risky play this weekend against the Browns, even if he returns to action. Cleveland actually has limited opposing QBs to an average of 13.41 fantasy points per game all season long.

Carolina Panthers QB Derek Anderson had 15 passes of 10 or more yards in Week 15 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and six of Anderson's passes of 10 or more yards went to TE Greg Olsen, who had 10 catches for 110 yards in the game. Anderson tends to lean more on Olsen as he holds the ball longer in the pocket and goes through his progressions. Olsen had eight catches for 83 yards in Week 1 when Anderson started.
Fantasy Tip: The Cleveland Browns have been good at stopping the tight end position this year, but if Cam Newton (back) sits out for another week, Olsen ($6,600) should be one of the safer FantasyScore tight end plays.

Fantasy Tip: Newton ($6,700; 13.4% of your cap) still has hurdles to cross, but he's really not a promising start on FantasyScore to begin with.

Carolina Panthers LB Thomas Davis (knee) is expected to participate in practice Wednesday, Dec 17, but may be a limited participant. Davis suffered a hyperextended knee during the team's Week 15 game.

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (back) will only start in Week 16 if the team believes Newton can protect himself during the game, according to head coach Ron Rivera. "I don't want to put a guy out there that can't protect himself," Rivera said. "By that it's being able to run out of the way, scramble out of the way, stay alive, keep the play alive by being able to get away. That's all part of it. That's all part of the decision that went into the first Tampa Bay game." The team has a rehab program for Newton, and his status will be determined based on if he can meet the rehab goals during the week.
Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to monitor this situation during the week to see if Newton has a chance to play in Week 16. Newton could be limited if he is cleared to play, so owners may want to use a different option at quarterback for this upcoming week.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to monitor his practice participation next week to have a better idea on his status. QB Derek Anderson will be starting in his place in Week 15 but probably should not be a starting option for owners on FantasyScore.

Fantasy Tip: Jonathan Stewart likely will receive a majority of the carries this week with Williams out of the lineup. Stewart has a favorable matchup this week and could be a solid investment on FantasyScore at $5,000.

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (hip) has averaged more than seven yards per carry in each of the team's last two games, and his 32 carries between those games are his most over a two-game stretch this year.
Fantasy Tip: Stewart is set to start against the Buccaneers in Week 15, and with Derek Anderson starting at quarterback, Stewart will likely be leaned on heavily. He will take up 10.0% of the cap ($5,000) at FantasyScore and should make a strong play.

Fantasy Tip: With DeAngelo Williams (hand) doubtful, Stewart ($5,000) should see the lion's share of the carries again this weekend. The Buccaneers have yielded their fair share of fantasy points to running backs this year, making J-Stew a great value play at FantasyScore.

Fantasy Tip: Olsen ($6,500) has been one of the team's more consistent receiving options this year, and that shouldn't change with Derek Anderson at the helm this week. In fact, Olsen had a nice day in Week 1 with Anderson throwing him passes, so he makes for a solid play at FantasyScore again.
