Panthers | Tiquan Underwood on the bubble

Fri, 22 Aug 2014 10:09:53 -0700

Carolina Panthers WR Tiquan Underwood was signed to a two-year deal in 2013, but he is on the bubble for a roster spot. WRs Kelvin Benjamin, Jerricho Cotchery and Jason Avant locked in as their top three at the position. Underwood is behind WRs Corey Brown and Brenton Bersin, as well. Carolina probably won't carry more than six receivers on the active roster, which leaves Underwood in a battle for the final roster spot.

Panthers | Fozzy Whittaker in good shape

Tue, 19 Aug 2014 19:22:12 -0700

Carolina Panthers RB Fozzy Whittaker appears to be in good shape for winning a spot on the 53-man roster after the team traded RB Kenjon Barner to the Philadelphia Eagles Tuesday, Aug. 19.

Fantasy Tip: Whittaker has had a strong preseason, particularly in the second game against Kansas City. However, unless DeAngelo Williams or Jonathan Stewart go down with a long-term injury, Whittaker's fantasy value is rather limited.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin being prepped as No. 1 WR

Fri, 15 Aug 2014 14:47:59 -0700

Carolina Panthers rookie WR Kelvin Benjamin is being prepped as the team's No. 1 wide receiver in practices. "We've done some things defensively to put him in situations where he's being jammed, where he's being pressed, he's being doubled, he's being rolled to," head coach Ron Rivera said. "He's going to have to get used to it." Some were worried whether Benjamin would struggle with his route running at the NFL level, but wide receivers coach Ricky Proehl said Benjamin is more than capable. Benjamin has developed good chemistry with QB Cam Newton off the field, and the team hopes it'll carry over to game situations.

Fantasy Tip: There are pretty high expectations for Benjamin in his rookie year as he effectively replaces Steve Smith as the team's go-to receiver. Benjamin will receive plenty of looks, but he'll also receive plenty of attention from opposing defenses. He's been impressive so far, but he'll surely go through growing pains in his first season and be inconsistent for fantasy owners. Don't draft him as anything more than a WR4.

Panthers | Cam Newton not at 100 percent

Fri, 15 Aug 2014 14:20:50 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle), who is expected to play a quarter in his first preseason action against the Kansas City Chiefs Sunday, Aug. 17, said he still is at less than 100 percent healthy. "The thing that keeps coming back up is, 'Keep treating it. Treat it when it feels good, treat it when it feels bad. Don't be that guy that only treats it when it's nagging. Try to stay ahead of the pain,'" Newton said. "That's what I've been doing, and it's been paying off." Head coach Ron Rivera said the team will not run any read-option plays against the Chiefs this weekend. Newton took part in every drill in practice Thursday, Aug. 14, and Rivera was encouraged by Newton's performance in the hurry-up offense.

Fantasy Tip: Newton probably isn't far off 100 percent health, but he's taking things slowly and being cautious in the preseason. He remains a risky and overvalued quarterback in drafts this year. Without much to work with at receiver, Newton's numbers could easily suffer drastically in 2014.

Panthers | Cam Newton expected to play first quarter of preseason game

Thu, 14 Aug 2014 12:49:21 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) is expected to play in the first quarter of the team's second preseason game.

Fantasy Tip: Don't expect a lot in Newton's return to action. Getting him back on the field and in a game situation with his new wide receivers is a good thing for all involved. There are still a lot of questions surrounding this offense that could hurt Newton's fantasy football value in 2014.
