Injury Roundup - 07/01/04

Welcome to KFFL.com's Injury Round Up. Each week, we bring you the latest from around the diamond on key injury issues. Who are the latest players on the disabled list that could affect their team's production? Which players may be headed to the DL soon and which players may be returning to the fold in the coming days or weeks?

PRIME-TIME PLAYERS

The Oakland Athletics placed SP Tim Hudson (oblique) on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Wednesday, June 23, as he is suffering from a strained left oblique. The injury is not believed to be serious, and Hudson has been penciled in to rejoin the rotation against the Cleveland Indians Saturday, July 10.

Chicago Cubs SP Kerry Wood (triceps) is scheduled to throw another simulated game Thursday, July 1 at Wrigley Field. This pushes back any impending minor league rehab assignment to next week and it appears as though Wood won't return prior to the All-Star Game.

Toronto Blue Jays 1B Carlos Delgado (ribs), out since May 30, appears set to make his return Friday, July 2, in Puerto Rico against the Montreal Expos. Delgado played in a minor league game Wednesday, June 30, at Single-A Dunedin. He was scheduled to play one more game the following day and could be activated Friday.

Florida Marlins SP Josh Beckett (back) was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained back muscle. Beckett is optimistic about his chances of coming off the DL and making at least one start before the All-Star break. Beckett long-tossed during the Tuesday, June 29, game and reported no discomfort. However, Marlins manager Jack McKeon doesn't want to rush him back just for one start before the All-Star break.

The American League's second leading hitter, Baltimore Orioles OF Melvin Mora (foot) returned to the Orioles' starting lineup Wednesday, June 30, after missing 10 of the team's 11 previous 11 games due to a foot injury.

Chicago White Sox OF Magglio Ordonez (knee) continues to hit the ball well in batting practice but is still unable to run the bases without experiencing pain in his surgically repaired left knee. This is reportedly being caused by scar tissue that hasn't broken up yet.

AROUND THE DIAMOND

AMERICAN LEAGUE EAST

Baltimore Orioles - OF Jay Gibbons (hip flexor) was placed on the 15-day disabled list due to a strained left hip flexor Tuesday, June 29 ... DH David Segui (knee) could be back prior to early August, depending on how well his injured knee heals during the rehab process.

Detroit Tigers - OF Alex Sanchez (hamstring) has not healed as quickly as the team had hoped, as he has missed three consecutive starts after suffering a strained hamstring Saturday, June 26 ... IF Brandon Inge (finger) was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a broken finger.

RP Arthur Rhodes (back) had an MRI taken Wednesday, June 30, after persistent back spasms and a trip to the disabled list hasn't been ruled out ... 3B Eric Chavez (hand) is ahead of schedule in his recovery from a broken hand. He will reportedly undergo another MRI to determine the cause of the swelling.

However, he apparently won't be placed on the disabled list and will be available for pinch-hitting duty ... SP Tony Armas Jr. (shoulder) was scratched from his start Tuesday, June 29, with shoulder soreness.

New York Mets - OF Karim Garcia (wrist) has been placed on the 15-day disabled list. Garcia has tendonitis and inflammation in his left wrist, which could bother him all year and require offseason surgery.

Colorado Rockies - C Charles Johnson (elbow) does not anticipate being placed on the disabled list after X-rays on his injured left elbow came back negative.

Los Angeles Dodgers - SP Odalis Perez (biceps) had his scheduled MRI delayed Tuesday, June 29, because he woke up with dizziness and stomach pain caused by anti-inflammatory medicine. He will reportedly miss his next start with rotator cuff tendonitis. An MRI confirmed Perez had inflammation in the supraspinatus tendon that helps form the rotator cuff in his left shoulder ...
