Seattle Mariners manager Eric Wedge said Wednesday, April 17, that he is going to "mix and match" the playing time behind the plate with Cs Jesus Montero and Kelly Shoppach. Montero is back in the lineup Wednesday after sitting three of the past four days.

Seattle Mariners C Jesus Montero is healthy, but manager Eric Wedge chose to play C Kelly Shoppach Tuesday, April 16, against the Detroit Tigers. Montero has sat three of the past four games. "It's just overall," Wedge said. "I'm trying to give him a little bit of space as well. I like what Shoppach has been doing back there and I like matching him up with (SP Aaron Harang) in his first start tonight. I think that's important."

The Seattle Mariners agreed to terms with free-agent C Kelly Shoppach (Mets) on a one-year, $1.5 million deal Tuesday, Jan. 29. Shoppach can make $500,000 in performance bonuses. Shoppach played for manager Eric Wedge from 2006 to 2009 with the Cleveland Indians.

The Seattle Mariners are close to signing free-agent C Kelly Shoppach (Mets), and he's meeting with team officials and will take a physical Wednesday, Jan. 30, according to a baseball source. He's expected to sign a major league deal if he passes his physical.

New York Mets OF Scott Hairston, RP Jon Rauch, RP Ramon Ramirez, SS Ronny Cedeno, C Kelly Shoppach, RP Tim Byrdak and SP Chris Young all became free agents on Saturday, Nov. 3. A club source mentioned Hairston as the free agent the Mets most want to keep, but the outfielder is coming off a career season (20 homers and 57 RBIs) and figures to command a huge raise from the $1.1 million he received in 2012.

New York Mets C Kelly Shoppach was allegedly behind the text messages sent to Boston Red Sox management complaining about manager Bobby Valentine last month, which led to a meeting between players and management. Shoppach allegedly used Red Sox 1B Adrian Gonzalez's phone to initiate the meeting. Shoppach has denied the report.
