Boston Red Sox OFs Daniel Nava and Scott Podsednik and C Kelly Shoppach each went 2-for-3 with one home run against the Baltimore Orioles Wednesday, May 23. Nava and Podsednik hit solo home runs and Shoppach hit a two-run home run.

Boston Red Sox 3B Kevin Youkilis and DH David Ortiz combined to drive in five runs, and 1B Adrian Gonzalez and C Kelly Shoppach each contributed three hits in their victory Friday, April 13. Shoppach picked up the first stolen base of his career in the sixth inning.

Boston Red Sox Cs Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Kelly Shoppach have combined to go 2-for-20 with one extra-base hit, one run, no RBIs and nine strikeouts this year. C Ryan Lavarnway, who is 4-for-20 with Triple-A Pawtucket, remains an option to be recalled if Saltalamacchia's and Shoppach's struggles continue.

Boston Red Sox SP Josh Beckett worked in previous years with C Jason Varitek, who announced his retirement last week. Beckett made a start Sunday, March 4, working with C Jarrod Saltalamacchia, as the transition begins. "We've had a lot of dialogue," Beckett said. "(C Ryan Lavarnway) caught me in my first BP. I think this was the third time Salty caught me, and (C Kelly Shoppach) has caught me twice." Beckett allowed two walks and a hit in two scoreless innings Sunday against the Minnesota Twins. He threw 36 pitches in all, 18 for strikes, and said he threw nine changeups.

The Boston Red Sox are unlikely to carry a third catcher once they end spring training. Cs Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Kelly Shoppach are expected to make the roster, so C Ryan Lavarnway could be the odd man out.

The Tampa Bay Rays are close to inking free-agent C Jose Molina (Blue Jays), and a physical is likely the only thing standing in the way of an official deal. This would mean it's unlikely the team re-signs C Kelly Shoppach.
