Washington Nationals SP Jordan Zimmermann is considered a candidate for an offseason contract extension, as he is just two years away from free agency. He is ninth in the majors in ERA and 13th in ERA-plus over the past three seasons. Looking at deals of comparable guys in comparable situations, Detroit Tigers SP Justin Verlander signed for five years and $80 million and Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez for five years and $78 million when each had two years of arbitration left entering the 2010 season.

Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez (oblique) is dealing with a slight oblique strain.
Fantasy Tip: Oblique strains can be tricky for pitchers, so it makes sense for the M's to be ultra-cautious with their star pitcher. If he doesn't have any setbacks, Hernandez should be able to toe the rubber again this year.

Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez (back) has been scratched from his scheduled start Wednesday, Sept. 11, due to stiffness in his back. He'll be replaced by SP Brandon Maurer. Maurer was in the rotation earlier this year and is 4-7 with a 6.85 ERA. Hernandez felt more stiffness while throwing on flat ground over the weekend, but the injury isn't considered serious.
Fantasy Tip: Hernandez has plenty of innings on his arm over the last few seasons, so the M's will be extremely cautious here. Maurer was scheduled to enter the rotation anyway with the club going with a six-man rotation down the stretch. He's an option in deep AL-only leagues.

"He wants to start on Sunday and we understand that," manager Eric Wedge said. "He felt a lot better yesterday and feels better again today. He's going to go out and play some catch, but we're going to be cautious with him."

Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez (back) suffered a lower back cramp in his start Monday, Sept. 2, against the Kansas City Royals. Still, he is on target to make his next scheduled start Sunday, Sept. 8, against the Tampa Bay Rays. "Felix is a little bit sore, a little bit stiff today," manager Eric Wedge said Tuesday, Sept. 3. "So, we will monitor that from day to day. It's the first day after and you figure he's going to feel that. We'll see how we feels the next couple of days and go from there."

Seattle Mariners SP Joe Saunders will work in the first game out of the All-Star break Friday, July 19, against the Houston Astros. He will be followed by SP Hisashi Iwakuma Saturday, July 20, and SP Felix Hernandez Sunday, July 21.
Fantasy Tip: Saunders wrapped up the first half with a 3-0 mark and 0.87 ERA in his past three starts over 20 2/3 innings. He has re-emerged as a useful fantasy option in all AL-only leagues while he is running hot.
