Mariners | King Felix superb against good lineup

Fri, 29 Apr 2016 23:51:02 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez scattered five hits and three walks over 7 2/3 scoreless innings in a win Friday, April 29, against the Kansas City Royals to even up his record at 2-2 while lowering his ERA to 1.38. He matched former SP Jamie Moyer for most victories with the Mariners at 145.

Fantasy Tip: King Felix has turned in four quality starts in five outings. He has had a little difficulty with control, walking two or more batters in each outing with 15 walks total over 25 innings. Despite the increase in walks he remains a must-start across all fantasy formats.

Mariners | King Felix good to go

Sat, 23 Apr 2016 16:30:40 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez (illness) will make the start Saturday, April 23, against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Fantasy Tip: King Felix has had a solid start, outside of the six walks in his last start. He's an SP1 option in DFS every time he starts.

Mariners | Felix Hernandez could pitch Saturday

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 17:12:56 -0700

Updating a previous report, it is unknown if Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez (illness) will be able to pitch against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Saturday, April 23, or if his next start will be pushed back even further. He was slated to face the Angels Friday, April 22, but was scratched because of the flu, with SP Hisashi Iwakuma moving up one day in the rotation to make the start.

Fantasy Tip: Hernandez is 1-1 with a 1.00 ERA over three starts this year, with 20 strikeouts in 18 innings. The 30-year-old right-hander is worth starting in all fantasy formats Saturday if he is deemed healthy enough to pitch.

Mariners | Hisashi Iwakuma starting vs. Angels

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 13:42:24 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma is starting against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Friday, April 22, after SP Felix Hernandez (illness) was scratched with an illness.

Fantasy Tip: Iwakuma has an 8-3 record with a 2.71 ERA against the Angels during his career, and Los Angeles has the second-fewest runs (47) in the league this season, so it isn't a bad spot for the righty. In daily contests, Iwakuma could be a sneaky start because some competitors might not catch he is even starting. Just note, he hasn't been great to start the year with nine earned runs allowed through 18 innings.

Mariners | Felix Hernandez scratched vs. Angels

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 13:32:45 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez (illness) was scratched from his start against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim because of an illness Friday, April 22. SP Hisashi Iwakuma is starting against the Angels in place of Hernandez Friday.

Fantasy Tip: Expect Hernandez to return to the mound against Los Angeles Saturday, April 23, or Sunday, April 24, and given his strong start (1.00 ERA and 10.0 K/9 through three outings), you can start him confidently in all fantasy formats. Iwakuma hasn't been as sharp early, but he is 8-3 in his career against the Angels with a 2.71 ERA and could be a sneaky start in daily contests if competitors miss the news he's starting.

Mariners | Felix Hernandez working on mechanics

Thu, 21 Apr 2016 16:09:00 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez has a flaw in his mechanics that has caused him to have shaky control in the early going this season. However, Hernandez has allowed just two earned runs in 18 innings in his three starts. He's walked 13 hitters in those 18 innings to this point. "He hasn't been in a real good place with his delivery, with his mechanics, yet," pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre said. "You see him, he gets off to the side with the ball."

Fantasy Tip: Coming into this season, the amount of innings piling up for Hernandez had become a concern after he finished 2015 with some arm issues. So far he has silenced his critics, but the walks could hurt him if he doesn't fix his mechanical issues. Starting against the Angels Friday night could move him in the right direction. Start King Felix everywhere against the weak L.A. lineup.

Mariners | Felix Hernandez ties team record

Sat, 16 Apr 2016 13:11:58 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez had his worst outing of the season by far on Saturday, April 16, giving up five hits and six walks over five frames against the New York Yankees. Hernandez escaped with his first victory of the season, however, by allowing one run and pulled into a tie with Hall-of-Famer Randy Johnson for the most strikeouts in club history at 2,162.

Fantasy Tip: The Mariners' three-run fifth inning - which matches the amount of runs Seattle scored for King Felix in his first two starts combined - proved to be just enough. Although Hernandez's WHIP will take a hit as a result of this outing (from 0.85 to 1.22), his ERA is a tidy 1.00. Keep him active in all lineups for his next scheduled start on Friday at the Los Angeles Angels.

Mariners | Felix Hernandez fans 10

Sun, 10 Apr 2016 17:15:52 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez allowed three hits and struck out 10 over seven scoreless innings in a no-decision against the Oakland Athletics Sunday, April 10.

Fantasy Tip: Hernandez is 0-1 after two starts despite a 0.69 ERA. He wore down in the second half of last year, but he should still be viewed a low-end SP1 in mixed leagues.

Mariners | Felix Hernandez loses rare opening day start

Mon, 04 Apr 2016 16:27:47 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez allowed just one earned run in six innings while walking five and striking out six in a loss to the Texas Rangers on opening day Monday, April 4, falling to 6-1 in nine career opening day starts. Hernandez gave up just one hit in his outing.

Fantasy Tip: You'd expect better from King Felix in an outing in which he allowed just one hit, but his five walks came back to haunt him. Hernandez remains a fantasy ace, but concerns about his health from late last year as well as all the innings that he's piled up throughout his career make him a bust candidate in 2016.

Mariners | Felix Hernandez finishes shaky spring

Wed, 30 Mar 2016 15:22:38 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez allowed four runs (three earned) and four hits in just three innings in his final spring start against the San Diego Padres Wednesday, March 30. Hernandez gave up eight runs and 18 hits in 15 1/3 innings in Cactus League action, but he isn't concerned heading into the season. He's 6-0 with a 1.49 ERA in eight career opening day starts.

Fantasy Tip: King Felix's spring numbers shouldn't concern you all that much, as he was just as shaky last year. What should worry you more are his mounting number of innings at the young age of 29, especially since he had some arm issues to finish 2015. Hernandez is still a fantasy ace, but more concerns are starting to pop up, and his bust factor is greater than ever now.
