The Washington Nationals placed C Sandy Leon (ankle) on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained right ankle Tuesday, May 15, and recalled C Carlos Maldonado from the minors in a corresponding move. C Wilson Ramos (knee) was moved to the 60-day DL to make room for Maldonado.

If Washington Nationals C Wilson Ramos (knee) is forced to the 15-day disabled list, the team might recall C Carlos Maldonado from Triple-A Syracuse to back up C Jesus Flores.

Washington Nationals C Carlos Maldonado is expected to begin the season at Triple-A Syracuse as the backup to Jhonatan Solano, although he is expected to remain in major league camp until the end of spring training. Entering Grapefruit League play Saturday, March 17, he was 2-for-6 with a home run and three RBIs and had already made a positive impression on manager Davey Johnson. "It's very comforting from a managing standpoint to see him handle a pitching staff," Johnson said. "He showed he can drive in some key runs. Very veteran-like player and a quality catcher. ... I didn't see him play last year or the year before. It's just great being around him and seeing him perform and how he handles things."

Martin, Luis Atilano and Josh Wilkie; Cs Carlos Maldonado and Jhonathan Solano; IF Michael Aubrey and Kevin Barker and OFs Jeff Frazier and Jonathan Van Every to Triple-A Syracuse Friday, March 11, according to The Washington Post's Adam Kilgore. Ps Garrett Mock and Adam Carr were also optioned to Syracuse.
