Giants | Matt Cain rocked in return

Wed, 20 Jul 2016 23:10:04 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain surrendered five runs on six hits over 2 1/3 innings against the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday, July 20. It was his first start since June 13 due to a hamstring injury.

Fantasy Tip: Cain was rolling in May, but injuries have limited him to two unimpressive starts in June and July combined. That previous flash of dominance might be enough to hold onto him in NL-only leagues, but all other owners should steer clear.

Giants | Matt Cain back from DL

Wed, 20 Jul 2016 11:27:29 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain (hamstring) was activated from the disabled list Wednesday, July 20, and SS Ruben Tejada was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.

Fantasy Tip: Cain isn't of much use to fantasy owners in the right matchups outside of NL-only leagues, and he has an unsightly 5.34 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and is fanning just 6.4 hitters per nine innings. Leave him alone in mixed universes.

Giants | Return date for Matt Cain

Sat, 09 Jul 2016 18:36:37 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain's (hamstring) first start after being activated from the disabled list will come either July 19 or July 20 against the Boston Red Sox, manager Bruce Bochy said Saturday, July 9.

Fantasy Tip: Cain's numbers haven't been pretty this year, and he can be left on the waiver wire for the time being.

Giants | Matt Cain makes second rehab start

Fri, 08 Jul 2016 23:20:15 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain (hamstring) made his second rehab start on Friday, July 8, pitching 5 2/3 innings for Class AAA Sacramento.

Fantasy Tip: Cain continues to work his way back. He'd pitched very well prior to his first DL stint and should be stashed in NL-only leagues. Those in deeper mixed setups can stick with monitoring his progress once he returns to the Giants.

Giants | Matt Cain set for more rehab starts

Wed, 06 Jul 2016 17:06:18 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain (hamstring) will "definitely" make two more rehab starts. He's scheduled to throw 65 pitches Friday, July 8, for Class AAA Sacramento.

Fantasy Tip: For the second straight year, Cain's pitching has mostly been disastrous, as he was 1-5 with a 5.34 ERA and 1.52 WHIP in 11 starts before landing on the disabled list in the middle of June. With his best days far, far behind him, Cain is really only a matchup play in deeper leagues at this point in his career. However, he could be worth monitoring if he strings some good starts together, though he's still at least a couple of weeks away from returning to San Francisco.

Giants | Matt Cain has rehab start

Sun, 03 Jul 2016 22:26:17 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain (hamstring) had his first rehab start in an Arizona (Rookie) League game Saturday, July 2. Cain went 3 1/3 innings, allowing two runs and three hits, one a home run. He struck out six.

Fantasy Tip: The numbers are mixed, but the strikeouts are encouraging. Wait and see how Cain does in the first one or two real game situations before activating him.

Giants | Matt Cain set for rehab start

Tue, 28 Jun 2016 17:00:28 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain (hamstring) will throw a bullpen session Tuesday, June 28, and make a rehab start in the Arizona League Friday, July 1, and he's expected to return after the All-Star break.

Fantasy Tip: Cain is far from the fantasy ace he was a handful of years ago for the Giants, and his 5.34 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 6.4 K/9 in 2016 is evidence of that. He's merely a matchup play in cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues when he's back in SF's rotation.

Giants | Matt Cain ready for rehab?

Mon, 27 Jun 2016 05:20:36 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain (hamstring) could be ready for a rehab assignment as early as Friday, July 1. He will have one more throwing session this week.

Fantasy Tip: Cain's fantasy value is down this season due to a subpar performance, and expectations are that would continue. Hold off on utilizing Cain unless he turns a corner.

Giants | Matt Cain throws bullpen session

Sat, 25 Jun 2016 05:49:43 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain (hamstring) threw 20 pitches during a bullpen session Friday, June 24, and is scheduled to throw again Sunday, June 26, according to manager Bruce Bochy.

Fantasy Tip: Cain probably will be able to return to the starting rotation after the All-Star break and should make at least one rehab start. He has struggled this season and should not be a great fantasy option once he is activated from the disabled list.

Giants | Matt Cain back to DL

Tue, 14 Jun 2016 23:09:45 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain (hamstring) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, June 14, with a strained hamstring. P Albert Suarez could take Cain's rotation spot.

Fantasy Tip: Suarez has a 3.33 ERA in 27 innings, but he has only struck out 13 batters in that time. He's at most a depth option in NL-only leagues. Cain isn't worth stashing if you need the space.
