Giants | Matt Cain to start Sunday

Sat, 03 Oct 2015 12:16:18 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain will start the regular-season finale against the Colorado Rockies Sunday, Oct. 4.

Fantasy Tip: Since returning from the disabled list Sept. 11, Cain ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) has allowed three runs on three hits over three innings in two relief appearances. He has gone 1-3 with a 6.85 ERA in 10 games (eight starts) since the All-Star break and should be avoided in FantasyScore, especially because it is unlikely that he will pitch deep into the game.

Giants | Matt Cain to be used in relief

Sat, 12 Sep 2015 10:43:34 -0700

Updating a previous report, San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain will be used out of the bullpen following his recent activation from the disabled list. He had been sidelined after suffering nerve irritation in his elbow, and said that he had gotten into a bad habit of dropping his elbow and pushing the ball toward the plate prior to getting injured. As a result, Cain's pitches were flat and his command suffered but he used his rehab assignment to work on building his arm strength and correcting his delivery.

Fantasy Tip: Cain ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) should be ignored in FantasyScore as long as he is pitching out of the bullpen and his value in other fantasy formats will be minimal as well.

Giants | Matt Cain reinstated from DL

Fri, 11 Sep 2015 14:18:16 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain (elbow) returned from his rehab assignment Thursday, Sept. 10, and has been reinstated from the disabled list.

Fantasy Tip: Before the injury, Cain ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) was 1-3 with a 6.70 ERA through eight starts since the All-Star break, so fantasy owners have nothing to be excited about. There is also no guarantee he returns to the starting rotation. Take a wait-and-see approach in all fantasy formats until Cain proves he is worth a roster spot, and time is running out for him to do so.

Giants | Matt Cain to make rehab start Friday

Wed, 02 Sep 2015 17:11:02 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain (elbow) has left the team to head to Arizona, in order to prepare for a rehab start for Class AAA Sacramento Friday, Sept. 4, according to manager Bruce Bochy.

Fantasy Tip: If all goes well, Cain ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) could wind up returning from the 15-day disabled list after being sidelined for the minimum number of days. He was 1-3 with a 6.70 ERA in eight starts since the All-Star break prior to getting injured, so FantasyScore owners shouldn't rush to add him to their lineups once he returns.

Giants | Matt Cain placed on DL

Fri, 28 Aug 2015 16:52:07 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain (elbow) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday, Aug. 28, because of nerve irritation in his elbow. The Giants also recalled SP Chris Heston from Class AAA Sacramento. He received a cortisone shot and underwent an MRI a few days ago which came back clean. Cain hopes to be able to pitch after 15 days.

Fantasy Tip: Owners should monitor Cain's ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) recovery over the next few weeks to see if he has a chance to pitch again this season. Heston will be facing the St. Louis Cardinals this weekend and may not be a great option for fantasy owners.

Giants | Matt Cain might be skipped

Wed, 26 Aug 2015 18:43:19 -0700

The San Francisco Giants might skip SP Matt Cain's next turn in the rotation, and are considering SP Tim Hudson (shoulder) or SP Chris Heston for the assignment.

Fantasy Tip: Cain ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) hasn't been so hot lately, and FantasyScore players will want to avoid him until he gets untracked. He is 0-2 with an 8.03 ERA in five starts in the month of August, serving up seven home runs in 24 2/3 innings.

Giants | Matt Cain has mixed results vs. Cubs

Tue, 25 Aug 2015 15:35:51 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain is 0-1 with a 5.09 ERA in his last four starts against the Chicago Cubs, who he faces Tuesday, Aug. 25. However, he's also 4-0 with a 1.23 ERA in his last six starts at home against the Cubs.

Fantasy Tip: Cain ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) has been very mediocre this year with a 5.66 ERA and 1.53 WHIP in nine starts (47 2/3 innings), and he's striking out only 6.6 hitters per nine innings. Couple that with the fact that the Cubs have the third-highest OPS in the month of August and you have a recipe to avoid Cain on FantasyScore tonight.

Giants | Matt Cain to work Wednesday

Mon, 17 Aug 2015 21:38:58 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain will make his next scheduled start Wednesday, Aug. 19, against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Fantasy Tip: The Giants have had to shuffle around their rotation, and Mike Leake will not return Tuesday as expected. Cain ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) is a decent play in FantasyScore against Jaime Garcia at home.

Giants | Matt Cain to get break?

Sun, 16 Aug 2015 01:43:46 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain may be getting a break here soon, as the team is wondering whether to rest the struggling starter.

Fantasy Tip: Cain ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) has a 2-3 record and 6.05 ERA this season, not the best mark for a pitcher struggling to make his mark. This may be the best thing for Cain's confidence, but for now you should rest him in your lineup.

Giants | Matt Cain not sharp of late

Fri, 14 Aug 2015 16:10:00 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain is 2-3 with a 5.59 ERA in seven starts this year and is 0-2 with a 7.80 ERA in his last three outings. He gave up five runs and six hits while walking a season-high five hitters in his last start against the Chicago Cubs. Cain is 5-5 with a 3.34 ERA in 14 career starts against the Washington Nationals, who he faces Friday, Aug. 14. The Nationals have hit just .186 off of him in San Francisco.

Fantasy Tip: Nothing in any of Cain's ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) starts this year has been impressive, and he's striking out a career-low 6.3 hitters per nine innings. Even at pitching-friendly San Fran, taking a chance on Cain against the struggling Nats lineup doesn't seem worth it.
