Holmes rushed for 65 yards on 20 carries versus the Denver Broncos. "That's a lot for him all of a sudden, the first time really carrying the ball," Edwards said of Holmes. "He made some runs, he hit some holes, he made some runs on his own and made some guys miss."

Head coach Herman Edwards, however, does not know at this point when Holmes will see action. "I don't know. I'd like to see him practice first. I'll be able to answer that Wednesday after practice or Thursday," Edwards said. Holmes has been on the team's non-football injury list since the start of the season. He did work alone on the sidelines. Holmes said his return was delayed because team president/general manager Carl Peterson was out of town. He said team physician Jon Browne wanted to make sure everyone was on the same page before Holmes hit the field. However, head coach Herman Edwards said doctors gave Holmes the OK to take part in contact drills. Edwards said he had a long talk with Holmes and Holmes hinted he wasn't in good enough condition to return. Edwards then called Holmes not practicing a "collective decision" to leave him on the PUP for the time being. Holmes also was not present recently at the team's game, instead opting to go spend time with his family. Holmes said it was excused by the team but Edwards said he wasn't aware of it.

"He will be active and we'll be keeping him in shape. He has a history of overcoming odds and he has done that in the past," Edwards said. He went on to note Holmes has not played in a long time, which they have to keep in mind, and they are going to protect him. "He understands that and everyone's pulling for him, and hopefully he has an opportunity to go," Edwards said.

"Having this extended time off is giving me an opportunity for any swelling or fluid levels to become very stable, so I think I'm in great shape," Holmes said while attending the memorial for team owner Lamar Hunt. "What was needed was some time off. Having an entire 12 months without contact has put me in position to be able to make a decision in '07 whether I should return." Holmes, however, will continue to take his time before making a final decision on his playing future.

Wed, 02 Aug 2006 19:18:52 -0700 Elizabeth Merrill, of the Kansas City Star, reports the Kansas City Chiefs are preparing to move on without RB Priest Holmes (neck), arranging a trade with New Orleans to acquire RB Michael Bennett. Bennett arrived Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 2, in River Falls, shook hands with head coach Herm Edwards, and headed off to a physical. What happened a few days before that in another medical exam may have clinched the deal. Holmes was evaluated by spinal specialist Robert Watkins late last week and again wasn't cleared for contact. Back in San Antonio Wednesday, Holmes' trainer, who's helped him come back from hip and knee injuries, said he hasn't seen Holmes in two weeks. "I'm in limbo," Bremond "Bay Bay" McClinton said. "I've been trying to call him, but he hasn't called me back. He must be doing it on his own, because I haven't seen him." Chiefs' president/general manager Carl Peterson said that nothing should be read into the fact Holmes isn't in River Falls with the team or that Holmes still isn't medically sound to play more than nine months after suffering a helmet-to-helmet collision in San Diego. He said tests showed Holmes' condition is improving.
