Sander by dropping a snap on his first attempt while Sander had a steadier, more consistent showing Saturday evening, Aug. 19. On his first punt, following the opening possession of the game, Sander boomed a 61-yarder with 5.1 seconds of hang time. It also seemed significant that Sander got to go first, since Ryan had been kicking first in practice and in last week's loss at San Diego.

Todd Rosiak, of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, reports Green Bay Packers P Jon Ryan is taking aim at earning the team's punter job. To do so, he'll have to beat out incumbent P B.J. Sander. Although he has no previous NFL experience, the 6-foot, 202-pound Ryan did post impressive numbers in the CFL. He averaged a league-record 50.6 gross yards per punt last season for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, with a long of 82. In 2004, his first in Winnipeg, he booted a 92-yarder. Ryan and Sander have had limited opportunities thus far to punt in a team setting but when they have, the results have been inconsistent. Ryan, on the other hand, had an extremely successful season in 2005 in the CFL, breaking the league's single-season punting record with 50.6 yards. Ryan will need to adjust his style to gain more hang time, but he feels he can punt in the NFL and will try to prove it in the offseason.
