The Associated Press reports free-agent PK Morten Andersen (Falcons) has decided to retire from the National Football League due to knee problems. Andersen said Monday, Dec. 8, he has given up his search to resume his NFL career. "I realized I no longer can train in an optimal way because of my knees," Andersen said in a phone interview. "So I am retiring."

The Associated Press reports Atlanta Falcons PK Morten Andersen was good on four field goals during the team's Week 4 game against the Houston Texans. Anderson connected from 28, 22, 36 and 46 yards. He had a 42-yard attempt come up short, but it might have been nicked by a Texans' rusher.

John Hollis, of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, reports unrestricted free-agent PK Morten Andersen (Falcons) continues to work out in hopes of being the oldest man ever to play in an NFL game. "For me, it was always about setting goals. When I was in my 20s, I said I wanted to play into my 30s. When I was in my 30s, I said I wanted to play into my 40s. So here we are ó I'm going to be 47 in August, so 50 was just the next step," Andersen said.

Chris Pika, of AtlantaFalcons.com, reports Atlanta Falcons PK Morten Andersen kicked his 539th career field goal during the Week 16 game. He is now the NFL's all-time leader in field goals, breaking former NFL PK Gary Anderson's mark of 538 career field goals.

Jay Glazer, of FOXSports.com, reports Atlanta Falcons PK Morten Andersen called the New Orleans Saints a few days before signing with the Atlanta Falcons to ask if they would sign him for a day so he could retire a Saint. Saints officials admitted they had made plans to grant him his request. However, Andersen signed with the Falcons instead.

The Associated Press reports Denver Broncos PK Jason Elam became the first NFL player to score 100 points in each of his first 13 seasons when he kicked an extra point in the third quarter of the team's Week 15 game. Elam is now one season short of matching the career record held by PKs Morten Andersen and Gary Anderson, who have 14 100-point seasons - but not consecutively.

Associated Press reports the Kansas City Chiefs have informed PK Morten Andersen that he has lost his job and will be released. Head coach Dick Vermeil said it was a "tough decision" to make and also termed it a "risky decision." Vermeil plans to contact other teams about Andersen, 44, to help him get another opportunity.

Tynes couldn't unseat him in 2001 or 2002, but has seemed to hold an edge over Andersen due to a strong training camp. Head coach Dick Vermeil said everyone knows Tynes is better on kickoffs, but it'll come down to which kicker can make the 48-yard field goal with no time left on the clock.

Andersen will be 44 years, 24 days old on Opening Day 2004, which would make him the oldest player to wear a Chiefs' uniform in a regular season contest, bypassing QB Warren Moon (44 years, eight days in 2000).

Andersen made his attempts from 35, 40, 45, and 50 yards out. The 50-yard make would have been good from at least 55 yards.

Adam Teicher, of the Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs head coach Dick Vermeil initially wanted to save wear and tear on K Morten Andersen (knee), who will be 43 next month and in December had surgery to repair cartilage damage in his plant knee. The plan was to use either P Jason Baker or P Leo Araguz to kick off. But the Chiefs aren't confident either player can kick off as well as Andersen. An alternative is K Jose Cortez, the other kicker in camp. Cortez excels on kickoffs, but Vermeil is unlikely to use a roster spot for a player who does nothing else.

The contract also included a $400,000 signing bonus. The deal breaks down as such: base salaries of $755,000 (2003); $760,000 (2004); $765,000 (2005) and $770,000 (2006).

The NY Post reports the New York Giants contacted free agent PK Morten Andersen (Chiefs) on Wednesday. Andersen, who acts as his own agent, figures he will kick this season either for the Giants or the Kansas City Chiefs. "They want me there," Andersen told The Post, referring to the Giants. "It's just a matter of working out the numbers. They reiterated again they'd love to have me, and there's certainly interest on my part to make that happen." Currently, Andersen's price may be too steep for the Giants and he wants more than a one-year deal.

Updating an earlier story, the Ap reports with PK Morten Andersen (hamstring) hurting, the Kansas City Chiefs plan to give tryouts to a few PKs this week. "It's possible Morten could kick field goals and we'd have somebody else do the kickoffs," coach Dick Vermeil said. "He still has good strength in the leg. But we're still bringing four kickers in (Tuesday), four guys off the street, to take a look at and see if we have to go in that direction." One of the four is free agent PK Michael Husted.
