The Associated Press reports free-agent PK Morten Andersen (Falcons) has decided to retire from the National Football League due to knee problems. Andersen said Monday, Dec. 8, he has given up his search to resume his NFL career. "I realized I no longer can train in an optimal way because of my knees," Andersen said in a phone interview. "So I am retiring."

John Hollis, of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, reports unrestricted free-agent PK Morten Andersen (Falcons) continues to work out in hopes of being the oldest man ever to play in an NFL game. "For me, it was always about setting goals. When I was in my 20s, I said I wanted to play into my 30s. When I was in my 30s, I said I wanted to play into my 40s. So here we are — I'm going to be 47 in August, so 50 was just the next step," Andersen said.

The plan was to use either P Jason Baker or P Leo Araguz to kick off. But the Chiefs aren't confident either player can kick off as well as Andersen. An alternative is K Jose Cortez, the other kicker in camp. Cortez excels on kickoffs, but Vermeil is unlikely to use a roster spot for a player who does nothing else.

The NY Post reports the New York Giants contacted free agent PK Morten Andersen (Chiefs) on Wednesday. Andersen, who acts as his own agent, figures he will kick this season either for the Giants or the Kansas City Chiefs. "They want me there," Andersen told The Post, referring to the Giants. "It's just a matter of working out the numbers. They reiterated again they'd love to have me, and there's certainly interest on my part to make that happen." "It's possible Morten could kick field goals and we'd have somebody else do the kickoffs," coach Dick Vermeil said. "He still has good strength in the leg.
